Moments

I know that moments are calculated by multiply force by perpendicular distance to line to action of force. Is it okay to find the distance to a force and then find the component of that force which is perpendicular? Thank you.

Yes, the sin(theta) can be thought of as either multiplying the force or the distance or simply treat it as a multiplier.
