what happens if you miss a gcse?? when you re-take the exam on a contingency day do they give you a different paper to your peers in case of cheating? just curious, not that I'll miss any

That's not what a the contingency days are for. Those dates are set aside in case a national event or incident had a significant effect on the exam timetable. In such a case then everyone will set the paper on the new date - hence there is no need for "a different paper to your peers".

If you miss an exam for an acceptable reason, then the exam board can calculate your grade based upon the papers you did manage to sit. If you just missed the bus, or got up late, you'll simply get a zero on that paper.
