How do I know it goes from 2 to 12 and how do I know it’s over 36??

List all of the possibilities, so (1,1), (1,2), ..., (1,6), (2,1), (2,2), ..., (2,6), ... , (6,6).
(Tabulate it is easier)
Remember the dice are different, that's why order matters here.
And thus we have 36.
And yes, this is the most efficient way. No trickery needed.
Maybe a better question would be if not 36, what do you think it should be?
