Should I take the standard route or go specialised for 2nd year modules?

I am studying with the OU for a Business Management degree.

The modules I want to choose for the second and third year follow the marketing route but I can also do these by going the standard route.

So the only difference is that at the end of the day my degree title will either be 'BA (Honours) Business Management' or 'BA (Honours) Business Management (Marketing)'

Are there any pros or cons to choosing either? Maybe I could modify my CV and add '(Marketing)' at the end when applying for marketing jobs and remove it if I apply for more general management jobs?

Thanks
Your degree name (and title) are unimportant. I'd probably suggest going the more flexible route so if you decide you actually don't like the marketing option(s) you aren't stuck with those!

Note that your CV should match the wording on your degree certificate/diploma and transcript, so I wouldn't randomly append terms to it. As noted it's not important anyway - if they care what specific modules you took they will refer to your transcript, and the more important thing will you demonstrating you have developed those skills and then applied them in a practical way through work experience etc.

You don't need a specialist marketing degree to apply for marketing grad roles.

There are pros and cons for each depending on your preferred career path

Thanks

Hi, I believe it doesn’t make too much of a difference, I do the same course (general business & management) even though I will deffo choose to do some marketing modules in 2nd and 3rd year. You can always add those modules on your CV if applying for a marketing role. I’d personally suggest that unless you’re confident that you want to pursue a specific career in marketing, stick to the general course, as this would keep your options wide open and not make potential employers automatically see you as a ‘marketing’ guy as soon as they look at your CV as that will limit your ability to pursue other roles so you’d be committing to marketing if it’s written in your degree. Same issue with other specialisations eg HR, Operations, Accounting etc.
