do i have an okay ish chance at getting an A* in maths a level if i work hard for it even without doing further maths? i got a grade 9 at gcse but i feel like i’ll be quite behind those doing further

Yes you can.
When I was in sixth form, the only expectation for further maths students in year 13 were to get A/A* on maths mock exams, and do well in further maths - because in our January mock exams in year 13, one further maths student got kicked off the course for doing poorly in both maths and further maths.
