Whether you're a first-year or a third-year, getting involved at university can feel a bit daunting, especially if you don't hit the ground running in the first week or so. However, Kingston University has lots of opportunities available where you can get involved and make a difference to the students around you - take a look at some of them below!
Become a Course Rep If you're interested in helping change your course for the better, why not become a Course Rep? By gathering feedback from your classmates on issues affecting your learning - whether it's inconvenient lecture times or assignments scheduled far too close together - you can make your voice heard and bring any problems to the attention of academic staff. Any student can get involved, so make sure to contact your course leader for more details.
Academic Peer Mentoring Sometimes, new students can feel nervous approaching members of staff about any issues they might be having with their course workload. To solve this, the Academic Peer Mentoring scheme here at KU helps connect a more experienced, second or third year student with a less experienced one from the same course, allowing you to share academic skills and develop bonds with students outside of just your year group. If you're a second year student looking for ways to get involved with KU student life and are interested in becoming an Academic Peer mentor, reach out to [email protected] for more information.
Join a Society This one might seem like a bit of an obvious way to get involved - but apart from just pursuing an interest or expanding your social circle, playing a role in a society can look great on a CV! Societies at KU typically need voluntary presidents, secretaries, treasurers and media officers that are elected annually, which gives you the perfect opportunity to develop your leadership and organisational skills whilst simultaneously getting to hang out with friends. If this is for you, register your interest in standing on your society's committee with the current president, or start to build your campaign and wait until election time comes around!
Check out KUextra If you're looking for the occasional enrichment activity to fit into your busy schedule, KUextra is the place to look! You can book activities and events (most of which are completely free!) which can range anywhere for yoga and boxing sessions to enterprise workshops and community projects. KUextra events can also help build towards improving your Kingston Award, so make sure to have a browse.
As always, if there's any questions, just drop them down below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Other than that, have fun getting involved in student life here at Kingston University!
