What are the products of 1,3-dichloropropane reacting with excess hydroxide ions at low temperature and disaolved in water?


In aqueous conditions (and at low temperatures), hydroxide ions act as nucleophiles and you get nucleophilic substitution reactions. In ethanolic conditions (and at high temperatures), you instead get elimination.

Use the above information to deduce which reaction pathway is more likely to occur and from that, deduce the structures of the possible product(s).
