Conservation courses recommendations

I'm wanting to go to university for a conservation degree (wildlife, zoology with conservation etc). I've been thinking about University of Bangor but I'm not sure - I would really love to hear from anyone who has done / is doing an environmental conservation degree and what they think of different unis please

Hello!
This is a very exciting time! I personally am an Earth and Environmental Science student but I have many friends who enjoy zoology as well as ecology and conservation here at Lancaster! I will attach the link to the course, but I would recommend coming to an open day or talking to current students through the website about their experiences.
BSc Ecology and Conservation https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/ecology-and-conservation-bsc-hons-c180/2025/
BSc Zoology https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/zoology-bsc-hons-c300/2025/

Hope this helps,

Hiya! 🙂

I'm a current Zoology BSc student here at the University of Plymouth and would highly recommend the course!

It's really varied in its content, which ranges from modules in conservation, animal behaviour, molecular biology, marine organisms, and genetics, and it can be personalised with whatever modules you're interested in to suit your future career path and what you enjoy the most!

I've found there to be a great mix of practicals and field work alongside lectures utilising lots of the natural areas surrounding Plymouth like working on the university marine station's boats in the National Marine Park, along the rocky shore, or looking at species up on Dartmoor or even fossils in Lyme Regis. Alongside this, there are plenty of lab sessions including dissections, biochemistry, genetics, and live/preserved animal species studies/comparisons. There is also a nice diverse range of teaching methods and a good balance of exams and varied coursework options.

If you have any questions about zoology or university in general, feel free to let me know and I'd be happy to answer any questions! 😀

Best of luck!

Hi there!

I'm a 3rd year Ecology and Conservation student at Lancaster and I am loving it! I've been on so many fieldtrips, including Kenya and Scotland (there was a chance to go to Switzerland as well) and the module options are really broad, meaning you can specialise into areas that interest you. My favourite modules have been animal behaviour, zoology and vertebrate biology. The department is really friendly too - the staff seem to genuinely care about your education and are very helpful.

One of the reasons I chose Lancaster is because of its proximity to the Lake District, Morecambe Bay and the Forest of Bowland - if you want to study an environmental degree then I'd definitely recommend a university that is surrounded by nature rather than in a huge city.

As Lucy said, I'd recommend going to some open days - I've attached the page with our next open day dates. Undergraduate Open Days - Lancaster University It's worth looking at other universities too though to make sure you choose the course that is right for you!

Hope that's helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!
