Disability Support at Kingston University

Regardless of the form of impairment, living with a disability can affect your life dramatically - and choosing to go to university, whether that's in an unfamiliar city or completely new country, can often be a bittersweet decision. No matter what assistance you require, however, support staff at Kingston University are here to help you adapt and make the most of your new student life, with support options ranging from accessible accommodation arrangements, parking permits, exam recommendations and support workers.

Exam Support
Whether it's a formal exam or in-class assessment, recommendations can be made for accommodations such as extra time, rest breaks, scribes and readers, smaller rooms or use of a PC. This support will be tailored to your own individual needs - and once you submit for your arrangements to be modified, the recommended support will continue on for the rest of your course. Make sure to check the submission deadlines for these modifications - usually the start of November for the exam season beginning in December, and near the end of February for the exam season beginning in April.

Library Support
After you've applied for support from the Disability and Mental Health Advisors, the libraries across campus can also offer services to support any individual needs you may have. With the use of Adapted Technology Rooms to help you study, one-on-one inductions to settle you in and additional assistance available for anyone who may find it difficult to locate books, photocopy or print, the library can be a great learning resource - and even if hanging out in it isn't your thing, make sure to check if you're suitable for any extended loans to help study at home!

Support for Specific Learning Difficulties
Sometimes, students come to university with undiagnosed (yet still very much present) learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and AD(H)D. If you believe you fall into this category and think you may need additional assistance in your studies, you can receive a screening and funded assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties through Kingston University. This can be done by either emailing [email protected] or logging an enquiry through MyKingston.

Disability and Mental Health Drop-In Sessions
Whether you're just having a hard time or need to know the next steps to get the right kind of support for you, 15-minute appointments for students with Kingston University support staff can be organised both in-person (PRJG0006) and online (Microsoft Teams). Outside of office hours, any emergency/crisis support can be accessed through MyKingston's Student Support guide.

If you've any questions or concerns about disability arrangements, just drop them down below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible with the right people to contact. Hope you all have a good day!

- Eve (Kingston Rep).
