Personal Statement:Modern Languages 5

I have had a genuine love of languages since starting French at primary school. I enjoy exploring new cultures as well as the grammatical structures that make up a language. Due to my aptitude in French I was offered the chance to attend German classes after school in Year 9 and was sufficiently committed to continue studying the language onto GCSE and A level. Learning a second foreign language has furthered my passion for languages, improved my communication skills and awareness of other cultures, and I aspire to progress further at university. During my A level studies I have built on my skills in translation as well as learning about a range of contemporary issues, both of which I have found fascinating and are areas I would be interested in developing further at university along with interpretation. I have also studied Further Maths and Geography in the 6th Form. Maths has increased my logical thinking and problem solving skills and Geography has opened my eyes on the world and its development. In particular a case study on China allowed me to explore my interests of the country and its history, politics and culture.

Taking part in several exchange trips to France and Germany has given me insights into both countries. The trips were a steep learning curve linguistically as I stayed with families to immerse myself in the language and culture, reinforcing my love of languages. This year I was keen to return to Germany to do a work placement in a Kindergarten. This greatly improved my confidence in speaking and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the children, the leaders and the parents. For 2 years I have tutored younger students in French outside school, which has been especially rewarding. It is hugely satisfying to see the students build their confidence and knowledge, and ultimately become more successful in class assessments and happier in lessons. Tutoring requires me to plan for lessons and ensure students are ready for school tests. I read “Chez Nous” magazine to improve my reading skills and broaden my interest in French popular culture, current affairs and other areas of the French speaking world.

I am keen to study a language ab initio. As China becomes an increasingly important global player both economically and politically, I relish the chance to learn the language and study the country’s rich history and culture. Learning a language with a different character system will provide a rewarding challenge. Through attending Mandarin evening classes, I’ve experienced a taster of the language, reinforcing my desire to learn Chinese and giving me the confidence that this course is the right choice.

I have sought to gain experience of non-European countries to prepare myself for my degree placement. Last summer, as part of a team I went to Kenya to teach in a school in the Kibera slum. Through planning and delivering lessons, I developed my skills in organisation, team work and public speaking as well as learning some Kiswahili. This summer I spent a month on an expedition in Borneo. It reinforced my passion for travelling, particularly in Asia, and the Chinese communities in Borneo gave me a small insight into China. On expedition I developed teamwork and leadership skills and had responsibilities for the team accounts, transport and accommodation. I raised the money for both these trips and contributed to team fundraising. I enjoy dance and have participated in many shows and clubs in and out of school and taken exams in tap, ballet and modern. I also help to lead a local monthly childrens’ church service.

I eagerly look forward to the academic and social life at university especially the year abroad and the chance to be involved with clubs and societies. I am convinced your course will enable me to flourish and develop as a linguist.
