Changing uni courses

I applied for medicine but I realised now that was not my dream and it’s making me miserable, is there any possible way for me to change to literature and if so when.

The deadline for UCAS applications is 31st January, so ideally you should withdraw your medicine applications and submit a fresh application by that date. However, there are always lots of options for literature in Clearing, so if you do miss that deadline you will almost certainly get some offers. 🙂 If you're still unsure, then take a gap year and get a job in the meantime. You don't want to be making decisions in a rush or under pressure.

Normally I'd ask why you're feeling miserable and if you could be experiencing post-application cold feet, but from your last thread it sounds as if you applied for medicine without a solid understanding of the career path or the degree itself. You mentioned that you were only choosing it over literature because it could lead to a definite career in neurobiology. This isn't true, and I think it would be better for you to study something you actually enjoy rather than trying to be pragmatic.

Have you heard of medical humanities? To my knowledge these courses only exist at postgraduate level in the UK, but there would be nothing to stop you writing an undergraduate literature dissertation with a medical humanities focus. Have a look at medical anthropology as well. There are quite a few joint honours degrees in literature and anthropology, and I have a feeling that might be up your street. Anthropology is a subject that a lot of school leavers haven't heard of.

The only issue with that is that if you withdraw an application completely from UCAS, you are not allowed to reapply in the same application cycle and not able to use Clearing. So best to contact the unis applied to and ask if you can change course or wait for Clearing. Otherwise, it is reapply next year.
