South Sudan?

The USA would like to bring this to the attention of the General assembly:

Referendum could lead to birth of a new country

[ooc] What are your genuine opinions? I think that it is a shame to break up a country, however if it helps to stabilise it then perhaps it is for the best. However it is basically segregation in a way as well since much of the violence is down to religion. [/ooc]

In RL I live in the country that can be easily broken up same way. So my hart is with the people of Sudan, and I agree with the representative of USA in their wishes that country stays together, and I would like to see the some kind of agreement made here because there is chance of new war and that should be avoided at all cost.

Separation of countries rarely works. EG- Ireland, Korea. But in some cases it does EG Czechoslovakia. However, I think it is more likely to exacerbate the troubles, as the North will want a unified sudan under their control.

Wouldn't it be better to try and help the prospective South Sudanese government take power of a unified Sudan? It seems that although there will still be a risk of conflict it will not last as long as if it was divided. The world does not need another Korean War.

Brazil supports the referendum taking place in South Sudan, and will further support the separation of the region if this is indicated to be the will of the people. It does not believe that Sudan should be kept united, if this will lead to further violence, simply because of members of the international community are reluctant to divide countries.

Iran condemns yet another example of neo-colonialism in the developing world. When will the west understand that it's imperialistic attitude is a disgusting relic of previous centuries? The government of President al-Bashir in Khartoum has our unequivocal support, and we view with great displeasure any attempt such as this 'referendum' to weaken his administration.

Albania asks if Iran will ever stop to classify world by "west" or "east". If they want to emphasize something they should be specific and clearly name those countries :smile:

It would be neo-colonial to keep the country together! Sudan didn't exist until the British created it.

Unfortunately such a list would be too long to repeat each time such an incident takes place. In general however, the nations constituting the NATO 'defensive' alliance are the worst perpetrators.

Iran would suggest that, if Albania does not wish to be associated with the actions of other members of the alliance, then it should withdraw. NATO is redundant in any case, with the end of the Cold War

The Republic of Iraq wishes that Sudan will do its best to remain as a unified nation. The Republic of Iraq is a diverse nation, however, it is also unified and hopes that the Sudanese people can learn from the Iraqis.

Brazil belives that the issue should be decided by the will of the people as evidenced in the upcoming referendum. It does not believe that other nations should be making such decisions on their behalf.

Nigeria never aimed to make decisions based on their behalf, Nigeria only stated her opinion on the matter

New Zealand feels that it's a shame to break up the country and that the UN should do more to help the two sides in coming to a peaceful middle-ground. Plus, we believe that this will just cause more tension if the two were to be separated and we could have an even bigger dispute on our hands.

Greece supports this and hopes that it brings southern Sudan what they want.

Estonia believes that if the differences of the regions are too great, then separation is the right thing to do, so both regions end up with their own democratic wishes. This is how Estonia was created, after all.
