Saudis to build world's tallest skyscraper - double the size of the Burj Khalifa!

Article.

The Saudi Royal family today unveiled plans to construct the world's tallest building - which will be an incredible one MILE high.

Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia will be 1.6km tall (one mile) when it is completed and consist of hotels, offices, luxury apartments and a shopping centre.

The structure will be twice the height of the world's current tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and FIVE times as tall as Britain's highest building, The Shard.

It will take a staggering 12 minutes to reach the top of the £12 billion building in the escalator.

The megastructure will boast a staggering 12 million cubic square feet of interior space - 12 times more than Number One Canada Water in London's Canary Wharf.

Simply ridiculous.

I agree with the architect who calls this tower 'phallic'. What's up with the Arab world penis measuring with architecture?

I always laugh when people say "saudis to build.." Saudis don't build anything. I think you will find that the architects and engineers are mostly western and the workers are usually mostly South Asian
Anything significantly longer in one dimension than the other two is likely to slightly resemble a penis. Tall buildings inevitably fit this description. If people want to call that phallic, they're free to, but I sincerely doubt it's of significance.

Haha that made me laugh

I'm fairly certain the average Saudi would rather have a decent constitution and no corruption, or the godforsaken Pakistani slave labourers would rather have some basic human rights. Same goes for Bahrain, UAE, etc.

These Arab states literally revolt me, they're the most unclassy, uncultured places on the planet. They think by making endless skyscrapers that shows how "cultured" and "modern" they are...whilst most of their citizens live in poverty.

With the standard of work in that part of the world the lifts will break with in days and the exutives will cry when they can't get to there office without walking a mile.
****ing awesome.

Bloody hell, calm down mate. There isn't a single industrialised country in the world that isn't trying to lay claim to something. Especially considering it's the title of 'World's tallest building', which different countries have been jostling around for. There's no need for you to spill your shrill hyperbole at the drop of a hat.

Agreed. The skyscrapers they mash out are inelegant and lacking in creativity. I would take a normal-sized skyscraper with a unique, elegant design than what is essentially a large pole - a metaphoric penis stuck in the ground and looming over the skyline.

Saudis just get cooler by the day lol... imagine riding your Merc on the smooth roads of Riyad and riding up to that mile-high beast.

Are you actually serious? Are you actually demented to be blaming what is clearly not the fault of Arabs on Arabs? I don't know you but the sight of all your Iranian flags (well they aren't Iranian flags but they do represent Iran) and this narrow-minded hate speech doesn't add together a very good image about you!

Firstly, the average Saudi - who the hell are you referring to?

And the Pakistani labourers are not slave labourers - they choose to travel to Saudi to work. Yes, you can call it economic slavery, but that is not the Arabs' doing - that is the product of the Western system which has prevailed across the world as the most successful. And want to know why Pakistanis travel abroad to work for Arabs etc., it's because conditions surprisingly aren't great, money or rights-wise, at home! Same goes for Bahrain, UAE etc.

Is that just racism?

Arab culture might be unclassy and uncultured to you, but it is rich and old, wholesome and homely culture to a great deal of people - that is not a very fair comment.

They think by making endless skyscrapers that shows how "cultured" and "modern" they are...whilst most of their citizens live in poverty.

Most citizens in Bahrain and the UAE live in poverty? Are you serious?

And skyscrapers aren't about showing how cultured they are - they have culture. It is about moving into the modern times. Do you despise the USA for what is the worst disparity of wealth amongst its citizens, far worse than any other nation on earth, before you comment on Arab nations? In the USA - probably a bastion of freedom of whatever you want to call it, a small, select group of upper-middle class white, Christians and Jews possess 85% of the nation's wealth - whilst the majority of blacks live in relative poverty in the slums. Fair by your criterion?

I'm impressed this is going ahead - the UAE had to pull out of its similar plans because of the financial crisis.

If it gets built, i will go to see it.

Since when does culture equate to race ?

Look up the definition of race before making stupid comments.

And personally speaking, I think arab culture is primitive, barabaric, backwards and generally awful

Surely there's got to be a point where these are too tall and just topple over? :lolwut:

On second thoughts, I shouldn't really have that attitude as a wannabe Engineer...

Well I got a 5 point warning for calling Israelis disgusting people - and last time I checked, Israelis are not a race of the human species either.

And well done for just telling me that Democracy was not racist, when making a blatantly racist comment in your own post.

Logically: Either you think racism is fine, so why defend Democracy? Or, you don't think it is fine, but believe you are somehow justified. Or, more likely, you're just a moron.

Oh hello, I knew you'd be back soon enough

Firstly, the average Saudi - who the hell are you referring to?

Look up the words "average" and "Saudi".

And the Pakistani labourers are not slave labourers - they choose to travel to Saudi to work.

Fairly certain they don't ask for their passports to be confiscated upon arrival and to work for a pittance.

Yes, you can call it economic slavery, but that is not the Arabs' doing - that is the product of the Western system which has prevailed across the world as the most successful.

Yes, you're correct, it is a fault of the capitalist system (which as a socialist I despise), but the Arab states on the Persian Gulf take it to a whole other level. Something like 80% of the population of Dubai are foreign workers who slave for next to nothing. Unlike you and your relativist ilk I refuse to see that as anything other than horrifying.

And want to know why Pakistanis travel abroad to work for Arabs etc., it's because conditions surprisingly aren't great, money or rights-wise, at home! Same goes for Bahrain, UAE etc.

And if you find Pakistan doing similar projects at such a level I'd say exactly the same thing.

Is that just racism?

Arab "state" not people. My criticism is with the undemocratic regimes that run these countries, not the people.

Arab culture might be unclassy and uncultured to you, but it is rich and old, wholesome and homely culture to a great deal of people - that is not a very fair comment.

I never actually brought up Arab culture. I said flashing your wealth with endless skyscrapers whilst your people remain poor is an uncultured and unclassy thing to do. Which it is.

FYI I don't think Arab culture is "unclassy" or "uncultured". But you like making straw men, don't you?

Most citizens in Bahrain and the UAE live in poverty? Are you serious?

See the above statistics.

In fact I'm sure most "citizens" in those two countries are relatively well off, it's just the slave labourers who make up the majority of the economic class who are not.

And skyscrapers aren't about showing how cultured they are - they have culture. It is about moving into the modern times. Do you despise the USA for what is the worst disparity of wealth amongst its citizens, far worse than any other nation on earth, before you comment on Arab nations? See above for my general thoughts on capitalism

That's new money for you mate. I find Saudi's are some of the most arrogant and disrespectful people even to their fellow muslim "brothers" elsewhere.

Well I wouldn't want to generalise individual citizens of Saudi Arabia, but I agree, as a state their monarchical regime is supremely extravagant and indifferent to the plight of their "brothers", as you put it
It's not the Arab world in general, these penis contests are between the Sheikhs of the GCC countries, trying to ways of wasting oil wealth instead of investing it into their peoples' futures.

The Atheist guys makes a good point - they are not building anything - western engineers are. If these idiotic, uncultured, Sheikhs actually gave a damn about their people they would try to help them become the engineers that can build these vulgar testaments to the fortune of the bedouin.

Better than the world wars arm race in my opinion, at least its peaceful! But if I had the money I'd spend it on scientific research or space exploration or something like that, but who cares, its their money and to each has his own.
I also heard Kuwait and Qatar had there plans.

Saudis....gotta love them. I spent 15 years there, and they're still full of surprises. WHY!?!

I'm from the Eastern Province and in the last 5 years they have made fairly tall office blocks, and I'm certain...they're still empty. I can't wait to see when they're finished with it and the oil runs out, what they're going to fill it up with?

OH, I miss living in Saudi Arabia. My favourite joke in Saudi was " Shalom! ". LOL, I'm so insensitive.
