I have a question for current students, I don't drink, is this going to be a problem at Oxford? Is there a drinking culture amongst Freshers?

Original post by Fang_RedDragon
You and me both. Im a little concerned about this too, but much more about the fact that I have to explain to people that I am a millitant atheist studying Theology. Umm?

Not drinking isn't a problem. A lot of people will get hideously drunk in freshers week. Lots of them won't have drunk a lot before and will throw up very watery vomit, having failed to appreciate that you can't prevent the effects of drinking too much booze by downing a jug of water in one go, thereby blocking your exit path.

Don't worry you won't be the only ones. Being a non-drinker for at least the duration of freshers week is probably very good idea. Studying theology when you're a militant atheist, on the other hand....

This is by no means a perfect answer, but as a drinker I can say that I prefer socially drinking a few pints in a pub than getting ridiculously drunk in a nightclub. In that sense, I think it'd be more than easy for drinkers and non-drinkers to co-socialise seamlessly.

I certainly wouldn't worry about it!

Neither do I! I'm sure it'll be fine, but worst case scenario us three can hang out

EDIT: not that hanging out with you two makes it a bad scenario! You know what I meant

A very good plan!

Thanks to everybody for the thoughtful responses I feel a bit better now.

Auuw bless!

TBH, I see all the gamer stuff in your tag and I kinda think we could probably hang out without too much of the "omg try to be friendly without coming across as weird" talking-to-people-you-have-never-met-before-in-a-crowded-social-setting induced awkwardness which normally turns me into a shivering mess. Not drinking, Child's Play, programming induced temper-tantrums, I think we would have stuff to talk about.

Now you see what I mean. Trying to be friendly, coming across as creepy.

I don't think you're creepy! Talking to people you've never met before can be hard, I have a horrid tendancy to babble and come across a few sandwiches short of a picnic . . .
Original post by fluteflute
How about you explain that to me now in order to get some practise?

Yeah, Im Dawkin's personal ninja.
Know your enemy and all that.

And atheism and... (from what I saw in the results thread) biscuits!

See, we're a ready made social group! And we don't need alcohol to ease the social awkwardness... we have the internet!

Auw thanks!
We live miles away from anywhere and my Mum has always been a little...awkward, can't go places with people, so although it sounds stupid, I haven't had a lot of practice when it comes to ease of social interaction. I mean, Im not a complete social 'tard, but I get a little nervous and then I start talking...

I know what you mean I've been at the same all girls school for the last seven years so seem to have lost the ability to interact with people I don't know/boys especially boys I don't know.

hehehe. No, in all seriousness its the ethics side of it all that Im interested in. Most people are, to some degree, being really immoral most of the time, religious and not-religious, and between the Theology and Philsophy, I want to investigate into whether we can construct a new system of ethics that doesn't suck so bad. In order to build something new, gotta wrap my brain around the old. So even if its all fundamentally *******s, its interesting and useful *******s.
Oh arse. Being summoned by the parent. Will quotereply you both when I return.

Oooh you sound like a pretty interesting person

I've been reading a Philosophy book recently (as recommended by an Oxford philosophy tutor actually) which touches on some of those subjects. But I don't think I want to give up half of my degree to Philosophy and apply for Computer Science + Philosophy joint degree.

Sorry, to barge in, but Hello! I am a future fresher as well.

P.s. Militant Atheism ftw.

Hello, what subject and which college? Also :-) it's nice to meet you
Not drinking is not a problem at all. At least half of my year don't, and although they do tend to be the less sociable half, not drinking is not seen as unusual at all. You'll fit in fine.

Yes, I remember you from our Imperial applicants' chat thread days! How's it going? Also, do you not drink, hence quoting us three, or are you just feeling particularly friendly?

(P.S. Militant atheism ftw indeed, but I believe billieerin23 is a christian, so let's be explicit about something I'm sure we'd all agree is true and say that while it's nice to interact with people of similar (lack of) religion, it's also nice to interact with those of faith )

Yep I'm Christian well done for remembering/stalking me :P and I agree it's nice to talk about things that don't get people riled up like religion . . . How about TV/books?

Computer Science, Keble.
Nice to meet you too, yourself?

I do drink, although am not particularly bothered either way. Like that guy before me, I am more of a "pint down the pub with friends" than "go to a hot, sweaty room and get wasted" person. So, just a particularly friendly mood

Well, my whole family is Catholic, so I have the whole live-and-let-live thing pretty sorted out.

If I remember correctly you are doing Maths and CS at one of the famous colleges? Not Brasenose, but similar?
