Are Oxford and Cambridge the only UK universities that matter?

Haha no I think they were talking about academics to be fair. It does have a good place on the international rankings.

No, that is untrue. Their local ranking and entry grades are too low to be considered as anything other than a B grade place.

Imperial have been much more successful in job prospects for engineering graduates as opposed to Cambridge I'd say, mainly because their degrees are much more practical (and they specialise in those sorta degrees anyway).

No, they are just the two best. I'd compare universities to Bond Girls. Just because you are not Vesper Lynd or Agent X, doesn't mean you're not still incredibly hot. It means you're just not quite as hot as them.

Same with universities. Oxford and Cambridge are the two best (don't kid yourselves London kids, LSE, Imperial and City aren't as good, and there are other UK universities just as good as the London ones), but others are very very good. London unis have the advantage of location, but if you're a great student from any Russell/other good institution you'll go far. Also anything top 30 in the UK is unbelievably attractive to foreign students in terms of thousands want to come each year.

The key point is it's what you do with your time at university and how you perform in interview. Anything else is just elitist snobbery. The snobbery tends to come from kids at London universities who want to do banking rather than Oxbridge.

Not to discredit you, but it's rather odd that nearly everyone you know chose a different university even with Oxford/Cambridge offers, when you consider that such a tiny fraction of people who get an offer from Oxford/Cambridge end up firming somewhere else.

Well I (and a good few of my friends I met at uni) gained A*AA a at A level (plus near perfect gcse scores) and still chose to go to Manchester. There are plenty of threads that explain it's low ranking in the league tables in the UK (this is mainly due to student satisfaction scores on some of the courses). But if you just look at the Wikepedia page for the university you'll get an idea of just how much it has acheived/ is still acheiving. Also as people have said it is also what you do there that counts (work experice, societies etc) and Manchester offers a wealth of this.

Nearly everyone I know chose other universities over oxbridge choosing Manchester, Imperial, UCL, Bristol, Southampton etc, instead.

Cambridge, UCL and Imperial achieved higher scores than Oxford this year.

Warwick are unreal when it comes to Maths, many see them only to be second only to cambridge. Honestly it'd be hard to choose between the 2 for me.

Everyone knows Oxford is a cut above UCL & Imperial and it isn't a couple of flimsy rankings that will change it.

UCL is overrated and it's going downhill.
Whereas Oxbridge always stays at the top.

Of course, look at the tables. Oxbridge is always on top and UCL is almost out of the the top 10.

Yes I graduated Bristol which is far better than Manc. I am also British so I know my own system very well thank you very much.

Anyway are you sure you got A*AA ? I find that hard to believe that's what you got and you chose Manchester ? No.

Yeah I did. And 100% A* in the EPQ and 9A* s and 2 As at GCSE. So I basically had my pick. I even turned down Durham (shocking as this must be for you to comprehend) I dunno... both Bristol and Manchester had places in Clearing/ Adjustment this year...
But it also matters where you'll be happiest and acheive the most!

So what are you doing now then? A grad scheme or something?
