Haha no I think they were talking about academics to be fair. It does have a good place on the international rankings.

No, that is untrue. Their local ranking and entry grades are too low to be considered as anything other than a B grade place.

Not bad but nowhere near the top as many South East Asians think

Haha I thoroughly enjoyed law. The only regret I have is not doing a PhD in law.

You can do any degree and go into law by doing the conversion course. My point is a history degree in itself doesn't present many opportunities

If you say so

Well I (and a good few of my friends I met at uni) gained A*AA a at A level (plus near perfect gcse scores) and still chose to go to Manchester. There are plenty of threads that explain it's low ranking in the league tables in the UK (this is mainly due to student satisfaction scores on some of the courses). But if you just look at the Wikepedia page for the university you'll get an idea of just how much it has acheived/ is still acheiving. Also as people have said it is also what you do there that counts (work experice, societies etc) and Manchester offers a wealth of this.
No. Oxbridge for one think aren't actually top in every course (including traditional ones).
Nottingham is actually suppose to be the most targeted by employers but that could include crappy jobs too so...

Depends on the subject you go for.

Imperial have been much more successful in job prospects for engineering graduates as opposed to Cambridge I'd say, mainly because their degrees are much more practical (and they specialise in those sorta degrees anyway).

Look at this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2526054/The-Cambridge-graduates-grateful-earn-7-hour-Amazon-drones-As-Ben-reveals-working-gruelling-shifts-warehouse-job-get.html

It's about the person, not always the university.

Imperial's engineering degrees are very theoretical, to the same degree as Cambridge's.

The difference comes in though when you consider that Cambridge engineers only specialise after 2 years, whereas an Imperial grad will have specialised from the first day.

nope.

It's not the uni itself that matters most, it's what you do there.

Also, some universities that are generally considered crappy have specialities such as primary education or games development.

However, there are limits. You're not going to convince me that bucks new uni is a good university (the irony that it's currently advertised on the top of the screen).

female.

How dare you speak trash about "games development".
No, they are just the two best. I'd compare universities to Bond Girls. Just because you are not Vesper Lynd or Agent X, doesn't mean you're not still incredibly hot. It means you're just not quite as hot as them.

Same with universities. Oxford and Cambridge are the two best (don't kid yourselves London kids, LSE, Imperial and City aren't as good, and there are other UK universities just as good as the London ones), but others are very very good. London unis have the advantage of location, but if you're a great student from any Russell/other good institution you'll go far. Also anything top 30 in the UK is unbelievably attractive to foreign students in terms of thousands want to come each year.

The key point is it's what you do with your time at university and how you perform in interview. Anything else is just elitist snobbery. The snobbery tends to come from kids at London universities who want to do banking rather than Oxbridge.

This  Let's all just have fun at Uni and make the most of the opportunities we get in life

presumed male, I am not speaking trash about games development or about primary education. Some universities are crappy at most things but great at PE. or games development.

Not to discredit you, but it's rather odd that nearly everyone you know chose a different university even with Oxford/Cambridge offers, when you consider that such a tiny fraction of people who get an offer from Oxford/Cambridge end up firming somewhere else.

Huh, hadn't though about that, weird well most of them are doing engineering, so I guess that kind of explains it.

In my view that's foolish, you could have gone to LSE. You'll regret it.

What they put on their web is not the real thing, that's just to sucker in internationals like ..... Entry grades are low see for yourself:

Nearly everyone I know chose other universities over oxbridge choosing Manchester, Imperial, UCL, Bristol, Southampton etc, instead.

Sounds real legit pal thanks so much for your contribution.

Cambridge, UCL and Imperial achieved higher scores than Oxford this year.

Everyone knows Oxford is a cut above UCL & Imperial and it isn't a couple of flimsy rankings that will change it.

Original post by Hazard17
Warwick are unreal when it comes to Maths, many see them only to be second only to cambridge. Honestly it'd be hard to choose between the 2 for me.

LOL. You realise Warwick maths would wet its pants and run in a duel against the indomitable maths Tripos?

You're being kind it's more like a large GAP. UCL is overrated and it's going downhill.
Whereas Oxbridge always stays at the top.

Just out of genuine curiosity, based on what do you make this assumption?

Of course, look at the tables. Oxbridge is always on top and UCL is almost out of the the top 10.

I will predict that it will be out the top 10 by 2017.

Do actually go to uni? If so where? League tables aren't nearly as important as you think they are when it comes to employment!

Yes I graduated Bristol which is far better than Manc. I am also British so I know my own system very well thank you very much.

It's even more foolish to imply that employers don't look at league tables.

Anyway are you sure you got A*AA ? I find that hard to believe that's what you got and you chose Manchester ? No.

I'd agree but you'd be silly to argue perception of prestige is irrelevent.

Yeah I did. And 100% A* in the EPQ and 9A* s and 2 As at GCSE. So I basically had my pick. I even turned down Durham (shocking as this must be for you to comprehend) I dunno... both Bristol and Manchester had places in Clearing/ Adjustment this year...
But it also matters where you'll be happiest and acheive the most!

So what are you doing now then? A grad scheme or something?

Not really, most internationals I know have really high A level grades but they are stupid to choose low rank unis (relative to grades).

Most unis have clearing places apart from Oxbridge but Bristol ranks higher than Manc in every UK table and has higher entrance grades (real ones not advertised ones - you DO know the difference don't you ?)

You will regret it. Heck you could chosen something like NUS Singapore and that would have been a cut above Manc.

As for what job I'm doing, well I don't feel the need to broadcast it to the whole world thank you very much
