Anyone got homeschooled through GCSE''s?
Hello,
I recently moved into the UK and apparently here I am too old to be in year 11. Even though when I used to study in Qatar I would've been in year 11 at the moment. Anyway yea, I have no option but to be homeschooled and do the exam somewhere.
Is it possible to get high grades by just hiring tutors? my grades are all A*/A's really so yea I don't want to get lower grades.
Another thing is IGCSE considered equivalent to GCSE? Because the IGCSE doesn't have any controlled assessment, and I think It will cause me less problems.
What is the controlled assessment in science even about? In Qatar we answered questions about experiments that's all.

First of all, how old are you? If you're 17 or 18, you need to do some A levels and GCSEs in Maths,English and science

Yup, I am currently doing GCSEs and am home schooled, this is good advice! Also, you can check up on you-tube (or TSR!) if you have trouble with anything.
Btw, unless you can find a teacher (possibly online - I used Net School and the teacher was amazing
), don't do History - it isn't a subject which you can just learn from the book (at least, not with Edexcel - it's possibly different for other exam-boards). They say that 40% of the marks come from exam technique, and I can certainly see where "they" are coming from! 
You shouldn't have this problem with the sciences (literally everything you need to know is in the textbook, and a few past-papers should help you pin down the exam techniques), and while with maths, not everything is in the textbook, past-papers should easily cover up that hole. My brother self-taught for maths and took it last year; it certainly worked for him!
I'd also suggest that you find a teacher for English (particularly as it is probably a second language). Not sure for Art etc., but one thing I will say is, if you end up being home-schooled for GCSEs, universities (and sixth-forms) have low expectations from them - six will be quite passable - as they know that your circumstances may well mean that you can only take so many. So good luck, and I hope my advice is helpful!

Stick to IGCSEs unless the GCSE has no controlled assessment. 8 subjects would be ample and it depends a bit where your interests lie but you need to do:
Maths - any board as it is 100% exam
English - Edexcel have an IGCSE which is 100% exam. (Spec A I think)
Then pick other subjects, e.g.
Edexcel IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics (that's 3)
A modern language
GCSE RE is fairly easy to teach yourself. (e.g. Edexcel Units 5RS01 & 5RS08.)
1 more - IGCSE English Lit (Edexcel have a no coursework option) ? GCSE Law? GCSE Psychology? GCSE Economics? GCSE A second language?
The entry deadline for the summer is 21 February but you will need to find a centre willing to accept you well before that as it does take a while.

If you don't want controlled assessments for your modern language GCSE exams. then try Edexcel or Cambridge IGCSEs, they cover many languages (around 30 in total), so if you learnt a language fluently in Qatar you could try that.
Edexcel GCSE Psychology and IGCSE Economics doesn't have coursework.
In terms of English, its possible to do no coursework with Cambridge IGCSE English Language and literature (not sure about the latter).

Yea I decided to take psychology when I moved here because I dropped French. And in my old school we had no psychology.
I speak Arabic and English fluently.

GCSE Arabic does not have controlled assessment but you would need to find someone to conduct the speaking exam. If you can't find anyone locally then there are places that specialise in this, e.g. The Brasshouse language Centre in Birmingham. (You don't have to take all your exam sin the same place).
Another subject work considering if you like maths is AQA's IGCSE/Cert in Further Maths.
Be reassured that this all can be done if you are commiited, I know someone who moved to the UK from abroad at Christmas of Y11, taught himself at home and got 8A* and a B at GCSE/IGCSE.

I don't think there would be any point in doing GCSE Arabic if it's your native language. It would be a waste of your time because it is too low a level to impress anyone in future and speaking it fluently clearly indicates to anyone that you already far exceed the level.
I was homeschooled through GCSEs, teaching myself all my GCSEs: I didn't achieve very high grades because I had no tutors and I couldn't be bothered to work hard. My brother was also homeschooled through GCSEs but he put the work in and got straight As and A*s.... Honestly though long term GCSEs didn't make a difference, I'm now studying at Oxford uni and my average GCSEs haven't seemed to affect the chance of getting there, since I was home educated everyone just appreciates in the fact that you've been at a disadvantage.

I am a mature student and need GCSE science to get into uni next yr. I am also thinking to self study and sit on exam nxt summer in local highschool as private candidate. Just want to ask people who done this if they are successful? what sort of books i need to buy?
Is it worth enrolling to an online gcse course? I find them personally not necessity as they are not marked and they cannot help me booked a place to have my exam nxt yr. Are they worth giving a try or waste of money? I hope you can help me as i am literally lost. Thank you everyone.

Do you need GCSE Science or a Science? If you want to avoid all the trouble of trying to complete controlled assessment as a private candidates then you could take IGCSE Biology which is completely assessed by exam.
I don't think an online course would be worth the money.

(1A 5B 3C) I just want to know that theres still hope!2 A*(including Chinese but that was so easy I'm not sure it counts), 4A, 1B, 1C, 1D... so a bit better than yours but not much, I've met one or two other people here with similar kind of GCSEs to me... we're definitely in the minority thoguh most people got majority A*/As...
All I can say is that if you absolutely destroy your AS levels with high UMS As and/or entrance exam then they have to give you an interview... I'm studying Maths now at Oxford which is okish so far but... there's always hope
Thank you for your response. The uni said as long as the qualification i receive will be a GCSE Science it does not matter which route i have to take to achieve it. I did look into igcse science it looks far doable for me. I have my hands full at the moment (doing my math & english level 2, had 4 month old baby) so the easiest way for me to do it the better. I think as long as i get the exam and pass it then i will be ok.

I know this is a bit late, but I thought you might want my input. I've just turned 15 and have been going college since the age of 14. I was home-schooled myself. My grades are good
I've been getting A's/A*s in subjects like science, maths, english and health and social care. I promise if you study hard you will do great! I'm surprised you don't get the option to go college? All home-schooler's are entitled to it.
Next year I'm moving on to A-level's which I can't wait.
