home schooling

My schools denying me for homeschooling because of my grades!! And I don’t even think they can do that. My mental health is really bad because of school and I’m in a dark place and they aren’t letting me get home schooled because it’s a “waste of my education” I need some advice please!!!

I was homeschooled for my GCSEs and now with the Open University. I had to leave school because of my mental health in Year 10. How can I help?

my schools denying me for being homeschooled because of my grades and how it’s a “waste” of my education if I leave this far into year 11. But my mental health is really bad in doing things I shouldn’t be doing because of my health. And they still aren’t letting me be homeschooled! No ones listening

What are your grades for each subject?

Hi!
I would like to ask if you homeschooled year 12 & 13?
I struggle with mental health, have had self harm and suicide attempt, and I struggle to be in classes because of my panic attacks.
How did you go about doing a-level?
Is it possible to home school them?
My college has given me the option to homeschool

I was homeschooled during my A Levels, but be aware that a lit of subjects don't have a lot of resources out there on platforms like Youtube etc, like there is for GCSEs. Idk if you're planning to self teach, get a tutor or whatever, but it can also be quite expensive (all three of my subjects required 20 hours of tutoring for the NEAs) so think £2000+ but it depends on the subjects.

However, it sounds like you would benefit from being homeschooled. I personally loved it and it's certainly possible but I just want to make it clear that it's not as easy as homeschooling for GCSEs

Sorry - 10 hrs of tutoring not 20.

My subjects don’t have NEA’s as I am doing Politics history and probably law.

Do you think I should give this a go?
I would be self studying and have a tutor, but we cannot afford online school.

Thank you so much for your help

Hi, I think you could going off that! Can I ask what exam board you're using though as I did AQA History and it required an NEA.

Oh yes sorry my bad! I’m doing OCR History and yes it does require an NEA. Do you think that puts me at a disadvantage?

Well, idk how many hours you're required to have official, moderated tutoring for the OCR NEAs but for me it was 10hrs, £40 per hr.
I don't think it would necessarily - it really depends on how well you can research things on your own and find ways to make the most out of your normal tutoring sessions.
Imo maybe one disadvantage I faced was that I basically self taught myself the whole way, and only used tutors for the NEA. But since you're not doing that, I think you should be fine

I decided not to go to uni for personal reasons, I am pursuing my dream job however. I don't really want to share my exact grades lol but they were good - tbh I had aimed for A*'s, sadly didn't get them but that was due to some other factors in my life not connected at all to me homeschooling.

Glad that helps though, and whatever you do, make sure you keep up with your work from the start of your course otherwise it can be easy to drift off and slow down a bit when you don't have classmates to compete against lol.

My college has given me the option to homeschool

I have the same problems, I started my A Levels doing Maths, Physics & Marine Science. I love those subjects and I plan to use them in a Environmental Science degree at UEA in 2026. When I started my A Levels, I was in a bad place. A really bad place. So I made a change that would fit my education better. I quit A Levels and started an Access Module with the Open University, which is basically like an A Level, but you'll get marked along the way instead of at the end which is better for all students. In October this year I start a Certificate of Higher Education which is th first year of a degree, specialising in Astrophysics & Environmental Science. In 2026, I hope to start my degree.

Homeschooling A Levels is a good option, in my case though, my path was better for me.

Conclusion: My dreadful mental health mixed with a major depressive episode led me to quit my A Levels and go on an alternative path of education, where I'll be graded fairer and not feel judged and can work at my own pace. It really is worth it. Hope thid helps

Thank you so much! I’ll check it out. Was your course expensive?

For the access module, I qualified to get it for free, the requirements to get it free are quite easy. For the Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) I applied for student finance as it costs a little less than the average cost for 1 year of uni. The A level books for homeschooling cost about £500 and to book exams as a homeschooled student it can cost about £1k. Any thing else I can help with?
