Hi everyone! Just wanted to create this post with my thoughts on Apple.
I'm 23 and have used an iPhone since I was 16, and a Mac since I was 15. By no means am I an "Apple fanboy" - I'm not one of these who are like "Apple are the best, Android is crap". I think everything in the technology area has it's pros and cons.
But... After looking at the latest iPhone and MacBook Pro's... to me, it just looks like Apple have finally lost it?
Looking at the iPhone 7, the only differences between it and the iPhone 6S seem to be the different colours, it's water resistant, and it's missing the headphone jack.
The design seems to basically be the same as the iPhone 6 and 6S. As for the iOS design... looking at some apps, for example Safari and Mail, they have looked the exact same ever since the first iPhone launched! (other than a slight colour change from a blue to white interface).
I was going to upgrade my iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7 but the launch was just so disappointing. So, instead of iPhones, I jumped to Android and got a Samsung S7 Edge. It came out around 5 months (I think) before the iPhone 7, but just seems way better. The camera is so much better, the display is absolutely amazing, you can basically get all the apps you had on your iPhone on Android, it's got Android Pay... it's water resistant... microSD card slot for extra storage... and best of all...
It's got a headphone jack! Apple told me they got rid of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 to allow it to be water resistant... even though the S7 edge is water resistant and still has a headphone jack?!
Looking at ports, that brings me to the new MacBook Pro's... which weirdly, have a headphone jack? Why axe the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, but leave it on the MacBook Pro?
As a photographer, the nicest thing about my MacBook Pro is the slot for an SD card slot! Does the new MacBook "Pro" - a laptop especially for creatives, have this? No! But don't worry... you can buy an adapter from Apple for £30... what a bargain! (can you sense my sarcasm there?).
Better than no SD card slot... is no USB ports? Just why!? The new MacBook Pro's have USB-C. Apple say this is the "future". Well... it's not the future right now? The iPhone 7 doesn't even come with a lightning to USB-C cable. What do Apple say? Buy our £19 USB-C to Lightning cable. Not just mobile phones, there are so many things that use the old standard USB cable.
Surely it would have been better to leave the existing ports on the MacBook Pro's... the standard USB ports and SD card slot, but to also add the USB-C ports. Then... when the new technology and cables come in, Apple could have phased the older ports out? Why should a creative have to pay £2500 for the new MacBook Pro, to then have to pay silly adapters that will come to hundreds of pounds? The whole point of things like the SD card slot is ease of use. Apple are making their laptops thinner and lighter, but what's the point when your bag will be heavier with all these cables?
Also, this is just my view, but what is the point in the new "Touch Bar" ? It will completely change how a user works. I want to use the keyboard for typing, and the screen/mouse for everything else. I don't want to keep bending my neck by looking up and down at the changing keyboard.
I'm happy with my MacBook Pro and all it's ports right now, but don't you just think Apple are becoming a bit rotten now? Changing how we use technology and charging us thousands for it? I know times change and technology does, but because Apple can't come up with any "innovative" ideas now, it seems like they have to push ahead with removing ports we all use to bring their technology forward - or try to.
I'm happy with my Samsung S7 edge. It's got the ports it needs and is moving with the times. For example, the app layouts are new and modern. The phone isn't a 3 year old looking design, with outdated software.
Is it just me, or did Apple die with Steve Jobs? There is no innovation anymore!
