Ipad or tablet

My laptops on its way out and I have been looking at getting an ipad or tablet rather than a new laptop, my course is special makeup effects and I have written work aswell as design ideas and like to take timelapse videos on application days.

I've been looking at the Samsung s6, s8 or s9fe tablet or the ipad9th/10th generation what one would you recommend or pick out of then or is there any others you would also consider? I'm after one that I can connect to a keyboard to type with.

Thanks.
Hello,

My name is Haya and I have been using an iPad for the past 5 years throughout my course!

I really like the iPad because you can use the apple pen which is quite precise. There are also a lot of keyboards that you can buy and your iPad becomes portable.

Apple also offer student discount which is always a bonus (sometimes they give you free AirPods)

Enjoy your year,

I have an ipad pro. The apple pencil is almost like using a real pen and paper to draw and write. It's not laggy and works well with a thousand tabs open. I can swap between worksheets, reading and annotating a book and drawing with ease. It's great for handwriting notes and turning them into text. It's heavy but lighter than a laptop. Wouldn't be without mine.

A lot of SFX is now combining traditional with digital sculpting design and mould making. The industry standard is Z-Brush, but it doesn’t work on iPads , although they are releasing it for iPad later this year. I’m using Nomad sculpt on my iPad for my SFX FMP, which works really well and I’ve been reliably informed that moving from Nomad to Z-Brush shouldn’t be an issue. I would definitely go for an iPad. They also keep there resale value well, when you want to upgrade.

Hi! Emily here from University College Birmingham. I am currently studying a Masters in Prosthetics for Film and Television, however prior to this I studied a Bachelor's in Specialist Hair and Media Makeup where we did lots of special effects makeup. I found that for my project designs, mood boards and face charts, an iPad Pro was incredibly useful.
I believe Apple do offer finance options so you can spread the cost of a new device as I know these aren't cheap.
I'd also recommend the Logitech keyboard which means the tablet can double up as a laptop, as well as this, the apple pencil really is an amazing tool to use with the Procreate application so you can create designs.
I also found Procreate really handy to create mood boards, better than Word or PowerPoint in my opinion!

I hope this helps!

Kind regards
Emily 🙂
