I’m an LSE fresher (1st year) - Ask Me Anything!

Hello all,

So, as the title says, I’m a student at the LSE, I started here last month and have the unusual trait of being a northerner! (Not many of us down here...)

Feel free to fire away with questions about the admissions process, the university itself or anything else you’re interested in.

What course do you study? Which halls are you in?

I might have heard a lot of this already from you but what’s philosophy like there 😛

Very empirical. The department is called the department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method, as such you will do a course (LSE’s term for modules) on logic in first year that is completely empirical in nature and could be found in a maths module elsewhere. The Government (politics) department also does a course on Political Theory in first year (GV100) which is explicitly on political philosophy.
How long did you have to wait to receive your offer? Also, there has been discussion that the student satisfaction is low. What's your view on this?

I got my offer in March. The student satisfaction score is honestly warranted. The social life is very poor and honestly it’s better to just attend King’s and UCL events to have a good time (being in intercollegiate hall is great for this.)

I do think though partially it’s a circle jerk to hate on LSE from some students.

I did do a levels, in Government and Politics (A*), History (A) and English Literature (B): my offer was AAA and I was accepted anyway on results day.

Wow that's great! Besides from the good results, did you participate in any co-curricular activities or was leader of a club or something like that ?
Is there a lot of people who do law at LSE? Also are there are nearby restaurants near the uni?

Law is a very big department yes and LSE is quite prestigious for it

And yes there’s absolutely everything near the uni  it’s in Holborn in central London, you can get to anything you could possibly visualise in 30 minutes max.

I did have plenty of extra curriculars in my personal statement yes, including my political activism and the fact that I was co-host of a talk show on my local community radio station.

Debate society, Northern society, Hayek Society (a society for libertarians) and the LSE Conservative Association.
What's your hall like where you stay and have you met and talked to new people who you live with what they like ?

It’s an average hall, it’s in Bloomsbury with lots of shops and conveniences close by, and pretty much everything in walking distance.

I’ve met dozens of new people and several of whom I would already consider to be good friends, the important thing is to approach halls with an open mind.

I would recommend catered accommodation as the dining room presents a good regular opportunity to socialise.
