You can say this kind of thing about Einstein.

People who claim he created the idea for the A-Bomb.

He came up with the very basic idea and people took it on to the actual think.

You could say the same thing about Einstein, if he hadn't discovered a paradigm shifting theory of the universe and life as we know it.

I personally think that creating the Simpson's doesn't warrant a "genius" status, but by the criteria set by the people who compiled the list, it is fair enough that Groening is in it

Who the **** decided that JK Rowling was a genius?!?

She wrote a few books, for ***** sake! Jeez, I must've read HUNDREDS of books better than what she wrote. Alright, her books aren't bad, but come on, they hardly match up to some other authors! I will name some when I'm less tired...

She actually isn't bad as a children's writer. There are still better of course.

I find it odd how many adults read her books though considering everything else they have to choose from. So I'd still say she is overrated.

Stephanie Meyer on the other hand has no redeeming qualities.

And to everyone that's still debating what genius means, it's not necessary for this thread. Read the page 2 here - just pretend it says "people that are overrated".

His point is that intelligence, and thus genius, doesnt have to be a purely intellectual thing. Nelson Mandela for instance had great sensitivity and interpersonal skills as well as inner strength. He would like to call this a less tangible form of genius.

Intelligence is intelligence, being kind and compassionate is being kind and compassionate.

True genius is stuff like maths and science in my eyes and also the arts. I personally respect maths and science more though. I put Newtons achievements higher than those of any artist/writer, I also reckon he's a lot more intelligent as well.

Saying that people like Shakespear and Tolkien would of had massive IQ's, i'm sure I read Tolkien had an IQ of about 180 and he learnt a silly amount of languages and fairly easily.

The guy who wrote Of Mice And Men is definitely in there though. As is Arthur Miller (I think that's what his name was. Death Of a Salesman and View From A Bridge? Ok fine, those were plays, but I read them in book form :p: )

It just goes to show how being a genius is subjective. Because I have read all the Harry Potter books, and read AND performed in Death of A Salesman and The Crucible - both Arthur Miller, and I think the whole aspect of Harry Potter and the world she created is clever-er.

It's all relative.
In the UK everyone and anyone famous is called a genius or a legend, so if we actually made a list, we would be here all year lol

They're popular entertainers for the simple-minded public. They're not actually brilliant writers/thinkers. It's like saying Britney Spears is a musical genius.

Dude, even I fail to sound this pseudo-intellectual, and I thought it was my forte. Stop making me look bad.
Stephen Fry and David Mitchell are both, actually, rather intelligent. They aren't geniuses, but they are well-educated and well-read.
are they really popularly considered geniuses?
ShinyApple
Problem is you, and half of the people in the thread, don't know most of the people on the list.

JK Row. is a twirp.

Hawking IS a genius.

Fry is pretty smart and can use language in clever and effective ways.

Tarantino deservedly occupies spot 100. The one no other real genius would want.

I was referring to the list in the OP. Quite why you felt the need to belittle through false assumption is bemusing though.
Stephen Fry is the one out of the list I'd consider a genius but the rest aren't.

Anyone notice on the telegraph page someone posted titled "Top 100 living Geniuses" ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1567544/Top-100-living-geniuses.html ) like 20 aren't even alive... and it includes Osama Bin Laden at 43... below Mohammed Ali and abovve Bill Gates. WTF?!

Ha! According to that I've been to a party with the #1 living genius- although he's dead now. Lol.

Yes it's inheritently flawed, it just so happens that every person that has made major science and mathematics break-throughs have incredible high IQ's.

People saying IQ mean nothing are usually black!

You're completely wrong. Feynman's was average (129 i think). There was a girl on Big Brother a few years back who had an IQ of 179.. but she was a glamour model and hadn't even managed to get three As at A-level.. so I'm pretty sure IQ isn't that important.
KwungSun
You doubt JK Rowling will be remembered by future generations? She's the best selling author of all time (more or less)...

Oh and Quentin Tarantino belongs on that list for sure.

Is that a joke?

The irony is that you think this is true because you don't remember any of the ones that have sold more.
I can assure you if Feynman and that big bro contestant took a strict IQ test under exam conditions, he'd beat her.

I also didn't say everyone with a high IQ is successful.

1) Stephen Fry

yes yes one hundred times yes.

can someone for the love of god please explain to me WHY stephen fry is considered such a genius? all i see is a fat, middle-aged man, who is relativley eloquent and manages to read interesting facts of a teleprompter and the cards in front of him!

I agree with your second point.. some people might have agile minds but no actual drive/creativity/knowledge etc.

It's possible that Feynman's test was flawed in some way.. but how can you 'assure' me.. are you a seasoned psychologist specialising in intelligence?

I'm sure the average maths student has a higher IQ than the average bricklayer, but IQ is still generally considered an unreliable indicator of intelligence.

WTF GET A STICK HIT IT HIT IT

I think the list should probably be the 'The 100 Most Influencial People' definitly NOT genius'

And Paul Ekman should be on there for his work!!!!
I know a guy who got 15 starred A grades at GCSE.
No-one thinks he's a genius, even though he is amazingly clever.
This is partly because he loves rap music and taking the mick out of anyone/everyone in sight ...

Yeah, I thought the level of detail, especially, that JK Rowling provided was amazing - all the major and minor characters alone must've been extremely hard to think up. Didn't she spend something like 5 years just writing outlines before she started on the first book?

Yeah, thats what I heard too. She knows every single little thing and the entire back story of every single character - even characters that you only here of once, like Hogwarts students or people at the Ministry, and then worked out how they exactly fit into Harry's story and this universe.

To me, that takes an enourmous amount of brain power to think up and write down in a way that is so captivating and engaging to the audience. I can't even think up one character and find their life story!

People consider Tolkein a genuis for Lord Of The Rings - why not Rowling? She has done a very similar thing, just with a different narrative.
