Cardiff accommodation help?

I just firmed Cardiff after the offer day this week but sadly we weren’t given the chance to look at the accommodation options. From what I’ve seen taly gate and court would be my top choices as they look the best and I know that will be a big deal for me when i’m missing home because I am materialistic like that 😂 my question is what is the atmosphere like? I’m 20 and don’t go out much at the mo. I like house parties over clubs but I’m not the biggest fan of having people in my space so are these better options to still socialise but get some peace? I also considered uni houses or just joining a flat share because all the people I met at the offer day were year 13 and felt so much younger than me. I don’t think I’ll want to have a wild first year so is it better to go quiet living or will that be too boring ?

I would say its quite a friendly vibe! From my experience at Taly (I lived in Talybont North in first year) Gate and Court are a lot more chill than North or South haha. It's quite good for what you just described - liking house parties but also want your own space. I think the halls are a nice option for that since there is generally more space. If you still like house parties, I don't recommend quiet living, since they're typically for people who don't like parties or loud sounds. There's also private accommodation, which are also halls but hosted by external organisations from the university. They tend to have a mix of students (not just first years) so that might be something to consider as well

thank you! Just wondering how they place you in your flats? I have some friends who filled out questionnaires and got placed with people who listed partying or having a clean house etc as important- is there any of that?

Hi there,

You can book specific quiet accommodations but, in my experience, there was no questionnaire and the allocations were very random, Sorry I can't help more!

All the best,

So there are opportunities to pick certain flats, such as quiet living, as you know. There are a couple of other options which you can find on the browse accommodation page. The uni primarily works on a mixed-gender flat policy, meaning that typically you'd be put into mix-gender flats. But you can request to be put in the same gender flat when you apply.

Other than that, there isn't too much to add. I would say this is also partly because the uni-owned accommodations tend to have a decent team managing it. They're called the Residence Life Teams, and they can help to resolve any issues with flatmates. They also give you the option to swap flat rooms if need be, given there is space for that. I've used this service myself and found it really useful to be honest
