if you want to be really awkward, he is a cosmologist.

Go go astrophysics!

Lets just say he's a theoretical physicist bit of both :P

That's because IQ tests are skewed in favour of mathematical type minds. It does well in testing certain kinds of intelligence but says next to nothing about other skills - memory, creativity, emotional intelligence etc.
So people can be genius's/genii and do terribly on IQ tests...

Not slating your point because it is valid, but you cant really have emotional, memory or creative IQ to the best of my knowledge.

IQ is the natural ability to learn, you cant really learn emotions and you tend to be creative or not. Its a common stumbling block in these discussions. Unless your a robot who finally learns to love
Also as a general rule, due to the nature of the gaussian distribution, the measurements become highly inaccurate at extreme ends of the spectrum.

who the hell considers these people to be geniuses?!?! Nelson Mandela and Richard Dawkins?! GTFO.

They're among the most credible on the list. No.4 is Matt Groening and the list also includes people such as Prince, Mohammad Ali, Osama bin Laden and, I kid you not, Dolly Parton. :eek3:

Matt Groening? ok so he created The Simpsons he didn't invent the aircraft.
Mohammad Ali is an idiot and so is Prince. No offense but there's no way Ali is a GENIUS.. He used to be a member of the Muslim Inc. or something? The organisation which claimed that White people are devils??. And ... Prince, no comment - too easy.
Dunno about Bin Laden - he could be?

I won't comment on dolly parton. Again, too easy.
Matt Bellamy, Thom Yorke.

I wondered about bin Laden too so I looked him up to see if there was something I was missing. I couldn't find anything to suggest he was a genius though. I suppose he is exceptionally good at hide and seek.

However, he was next to Mohammad Ali on the list, so that would suggest there doesn't really need to be a reason. Being very well known seems to be the main criterion.
it all depends on what is meant by genius, as there are huge differences between some that has a lot of general knowledge, someone that is well educated(including speech) and someone that is genuinely intelligent regardless of there general knowledge or education, their brain simply works in a superior manner.
Reply 148
Genius doesn't just denote superior brainpower, it can also mean someone who excels in a particular field. So you could say David Mitchell is a comedy genius, or that Muhammed Ali is a boxing genius.
Hugh-Jackman
Intelligence is intelligence, being kind and compassionate is being kind and compassionate.

True genius is stuff like maths and science in my eyes and also the arts. I personally respect maths and science more though. I put Newtons achievements higher than those of any artist/writer, I also reckon he's a lot more intelligent as well.

Saying that people like Shakespear and Tolkien would of had massive IQ's, i'm sure I read Tolkien had an IQ of about 180 and he learnt a silly amount of languages and fairly easily.

Mathematical ability is genius
Therefore Mathematical ability is genius

Thanks for the logic fail
prince should have been higher on the list

I have never heard or heard of anyone calling any of those people geniuses. Intelligent yes, geniuses...no.

me either!

I am one of these people, why I have no idea.

If you don't know why then surely you can't claim to be 'one of these people'.

Matt Groening four places in front of Stephen Hawking?

Absolutely ridiculous.
Tootles
Yeah, he did an undergrad in Physics. So what? It doesn't really say anything, except that he used to study Physics. He is now a mathematician, whatever else he has been, because he needs to use mathemetics to calculate and prove his hypotheses and theories concerning cosmology. Speaking of which: if you want to be really awkward, he is a cosmologist.

i.e. a theoretical physicist.

And yes, he's a theoretical physicist specialising in cosmology.
AsphyxiateD
By that logic you may as well declare all sporting events pointless, then.

Well actually in my opinion yes but Boxing is particularly pointless as it is basically two men punching each other until one of them is unconscious.

Unnecessary brain damage is pointless.
Euclid

Indeed, I am not a genius. Just many people I know think I'm particularly clever when I'm not really, and certainly not as clever as many I know think I am.

"..many people I know think I'm particularly clever when I'm not really" = "...[I'm] certainly not as clever as many I know think I am."

Stephen Fry and David Mitchell are both pretty funny - that's enough for me, I think

Agreed. I wasn't saying that these could be included in an IQ test but these are forms of intelligence. I was trying to point out the limitations of IQ tests - although they're probably very good for showing logic and mathematical ability etc.
