Is this possible? I want to know because I have someone's ip who's been harassing me since last September and I want to give his ip to the police but will they be able to find out where he lives/who he is? I checked his ip on a geolocation site but it only has the town name

Yes. The police will contact the service provider to find out which customer was using that IP at the time of the incident, and then can charge them with the crime.
You won't be able to get anything using public tools like geolocation as the IP isn't a physical location of a computer per say, it's the location provided by the service provider through which that computer connects to the internet.

Would the police get his name as well as his address?? Because I think I know who it is but I'm not sure so if the name matches with the name I have then he's definitely screwed

They'll get the details of the consumer. I'm not sure if that's enough to charge as I guess you'd have to be able to prove who actually sent the messages rather than paid for the internet. It's worth a try though.

I have already told him that I am going to tell the police & he just said that they won't be able to find him because he uses his neighbours wifi but they'll be able to look at the router logs and match them up with his Internet activity right? And I know what tattoos he's got on his arms so I'd be able to identify him I think if they lined up all the neighbours lol x

Usually IP addresses are registered to the ISP so it will return their address and you would need a court order to get the persons home address, the police can do this however if they do so would depend on the level of harassment. A much better idea would be to find out who the persons internet service provider is and complain directly to them (tbh that is probably what the police will tell you to do anyway).

They will just ask the ISP for the address, but chances are he's using a VPN... sooo.. unlucky.

It says his ip is dynamic and his ISP is virgin media. I know for a fact he has got pics of me from when I was only 14 so it is actually quite serious and I am sick of being blackmailed by him. How do the police track people, is there a special software or something?

So there's no way of tracking him other than contacting virgin media then? :/

Police are very lax about things like that, even the malicious communications act and proving harassment is incredibly hard. If you know his name and want to teach him a lesson, this is what I did to an ex whose's friend was sending me white lillies. I knew his name found his details on 192.com.....lets just say he doesn't do it anymore. You just need a first name/surname, you can bring up his family, his CCJ records etc....who he lives with... all legally.

To my knowledge the only people who have the legal and technical ability to obtain a persons details without going through their ISP are the security services and they are only able to do so in extreme circumstances.

Not really, unless you have a friend who works for virgin that would be willing to provide you with that information (would be a huge breach of company policy) complaining to the ISP is probably the best option although you can also file a complaint with the police (however unless it is considered serious they probably won't follow up on it).

Okay. So if I tell the police or virgin and they trace the ip will it lead to him, or his neighbours router?? I don't want his neighbour getting in trouble. And if it does lead to his neighbours router will it be easy for the police to figure out that it wasn't the neighbour, it was him? And yes I do think its serious enoug for the police to trace him considering the nature of the pictures he has, although I guess if the police did trace him he would delete them.and deny it :/ x

If so, I am unsympathetic.

Yes he does, from when I was 14 years old drunk out of my head, the pics were passed around school and somehow he has got hold of them over 7 years later. I never sent them to him, and didn't take the pictures myself ..
