Help! Is commuting to uni a bad idea?

I'm currently living a 40 minute train ride from my chosen course. I'm not too keen on living in halls but I still want to get involved in some aspects of student life. My course is only two days a week, so it just seems a waste of money. Anyone else commuting? Bad idea? Good idea? HELP :frown:

I commute to uni and it takes 50 minutes each way, I prefer it because it's much cheaper than living in halls and it doesn't take long at all to get into the centre for the clubs etc. It's quite common among uni students, a lot of people commute on my course.

Thank you! It's all stressing me out. I just want to get involved and socialise and for it not to costs me thousands to do so.

That's a tricky decision. Personally I don't really make any friends where I lived in uni, but through societies and on the course. But its also good to learn some independence. Your decision. Perhaps you could apply for halls provisionally, and then decide later. FYI, halls are often dumps.

Yeah I looked around most of the halls and they're horrible especially the one in Didsbury. I'm hoping if I make the effort and get involved in societies and sports I should be okay. hopefully.

Doesn't student finance cover transport costs?

You get a certain amount of money to live off from student finance. This amount is means tested, based on your household income (the parent(s) you live with + any live in partner of theirs) and paid to you in cash. It is expected that if you do not receive full student finance, then your family will top up your money themselves. Because the sum is paid in cash, it's yours to spend as you wish, be that on accommodation, transport, food or joining the hula hooping society.
