Experiance in Mathematics Research

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, wasn't sure where to put this.

I am currently in my second year undergraduate degree in maths at Oxford, right now I am giving serious consideration to continuing maths past when my degree ends. I was wondering how I could go about gain some experiance in the field of mathematical research to see if it is for me/help with any future applications. I have spent a few hours on google and ended up with nothing other than schemes offered to students at different universities only, or things in the USA (I'm not going there, can't afford to).

Also, does anyone who has done a phd in mathematics have any advice or warnings about it? I know it's early days for me but I would rather be ahead of the game and know my options before I need to start making the important decisions.
