Manchester Economics BA or BSc

I've received an offer to study BA Economics at Manchester but looking at the course structure I really don't like the fact that you have to do so many irrelevant modules and I was wondering if it's possible to change to BSc either now (I'm in year 13 and I also do Maths A-level) or once I get in?

I also don't understand the title of the degree, it says on the Manchester Uni website BA Economics but now it turns out it's a BA in Economics and Social studies (which doesn't sound that great), would this be a big deal to employers, eg. investment banks? Otherwise the university looks fantastic and it has an amazing international reputation.
Any thoughts?

You can *ask* to change, but they don't have to let you change. I'd suggest that you do this now though - this will mean that you don't have to deal with it during the hectic first couple of weeks, and they can plan their numbers accordingly. You'd change by getting in touch with the School of Social Sciences.

It's BA Economic and Social Studies specialising in Economics is what I'm pretty sure gets written on your degree certificate. It's commonly referred to as BA(Econ) Economics though. The BA(Econ) soc does seem to get targeted by Ernst and Young, PwC etc. though https://www.facebook.com/BaEconSociety

Ultimately, I'd say that if you want a traditional, focused economics course then go for the BEconSc course. If you want to explore some other areas of social science, and want the opportunity to switch to specialising in another social science, then go for BA(Econ).

Would it still be possible do you think if I were to switch to BSc when I'm in? (providing I get the A in Maths)

And say for a career in investment banking or finance, would the BA Economic and Social studies title put off employers?

Hi, I feel the exact same - luckily you do A-Level maths, so you have a chance to do the Bsc course. The course structure and it's title is deterring me from coming here even though it is a great university, I initially thought that this was an alternative course for students whom don't have an A Level maths background.
I also what to go into investment banking and I hope that the course title doesn't hinder my opportunities, I may just go to the University of Glasgow for an undergraduate MA if this is the case.
It's pretty hard to change to the BEconSC as there are quite stringent on number of places. That Economics course is one of Manchester's most prestigious and it's up there with the best in the country. It is far more technical than the BA Econ and if you're thinking of Investment Banking or doing a Masters at Oxbridge and the like you are advised to do the BSc instead.

It isn't so much, 'you have the grades, so come join us', it's more of 'this is one of our best courses, so we want to ensure that only the best applicants are on it to ensure quality and attainment given the high level of technical content'.

As you can see from manchester.ac.uk, there are 4 times as many places on BAEcon specialising in Economics compared to the BEconSC.

I advise you to contact admissions as if you aren't happy to do the BAEcon, there's no guarantee you can switch once here. Many students want to because it is the more prestigious course, but they're turned down.
Guys, is the Ba econ at Uni of Manchester reputed? I don't understand why would you think otherwise? International student here...Please explain this question of reputation to me

I too got a conditional offer for Ba econ...
