Shivering

How does shivering cause an organism to warm up? Does it cause increased respiration?

Yes. The muscles contract and expand quickly (i.e. shiver), which increases heat production as respiration is exothermic- think of it as the muscles exercising whilst the body itself keeps still.

shivering involves rhythmic muscle contractions. ATP is needed for muscle contraction. So respiration increases (to produce more ATP) and heat is produced by respiration
