Why do you think it was a disaster? I had mine yesterday too and thought it went ok.. I was certainly a lot less nervous once I got into the swing of it and the assessment tasks were less daunting than I had expected!

Oh this AC was for Tesco, that is what I was referring to

That's really nice of you to stop by here  Wishing you the best of luck for e-tray!

May I ask how you got into your current role and what your progression has been like..?

My route and progression in the civil service has been rather unusual, so probably shouldn't be taken as the norm but hopefully I can provide some insight into the working of various department.

So I started in the cc in HMRC up in Glasgow, I started at AO level, so just short of the lowest grade you can go in at, and I applied after seeing an open ad in a newspaper. I done a couple of online tests (super easy for AO level, nothing compared to the FS tests!) and a VERY long time later, I had an interview, then another really long wait before being give a job. It was so long, I had given up hope and had 2 other jobs in the time between applying and being accepted. Upon starting, I was told I would have to be in the role for 2 years before moving to any other roles or departments.

...well this wasn't entirely true, because after 14 months I sought permission to apply on loan to the FCO. I still think they let me apply simply because they didn't think the little AO newbie from Glasgow would ever get the role AND make the move to London. Needless to say I did.

I absolutely loved the FCO and wouldn't have left if I had any choice but being on loan, I wasn't allowed to progress or transfer, so after my two years were up - I applied on permanent transfer to DFID.

I then moved onto DFID still a AO after just over 3 years of being a CC and my progression happened VERY quickly in DFID. In the three and a half years I have been in DFID I have been promoted twice and I am now the FS entry grade of B1 or HEO.

For those interested it's worth noting promotion and progression works quite differently between departments, here's how it works for the departments I have been in:

HMRC: You only got your 'progression ticket' when you line manager thought you were ready. It was then given on a 'use it or lose it basis', if you didn't secure a promotion within a year, it could be removed.

FCO: FCO are rather unique in that progression happens via an exam like system, you need to apply to do the exam, if you are accepted you then do an assessment centre type written test and then go to the 'board' where competencies are assessed then promotion is given or not.

In the FCO they keep a tight reign on the number of people at each grade and promotions are only open when these numbers need to be adjusted. It therefore means competition is fierce to get a place to apply for promotion, let alone to get the promotion - you really need to be the top of your game.

DFID: DFID has a policy of 'not holding anyone back' so you can apply on promotion at anytime as long as you can demonstrate you have the competencies being asked for...it's really simple. However, there are a lot of 'specialist cadres' in DFID so what I have described is for 'generalist' roles only.

Sorry if this is a lot of info but it gives a bit of insight into the various working of the departments. Also worth caveating this is my experience and things may have changed in HMRC since I was there. I am still friends will a lot of people in the FCO and promotion there remains stringent and tough.

Hope this helps
Hello folks.

So I started my application last night for the Generalist (better late than never). I've just taken the practise Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. What sort of scores are good enough? It said I was top 35% in verbal and middle 30% in numerical, would it worth applying?

I found the Numerical insanely hard, only knew about 3 of the 18 questions, guessed the rest. The one about presumed crime rates I just couldn't understand.

What's your experience of the prospects in terms of good posts and promotion on the GFS - Diplomatic Service?

Hi,

I have written another post about general promotion routes in HMRC, FCO and DFID. Although, I think it is fair to say that when you are a fast streamer, you have a different development timetable if you like, so it is expected that you will progress faster than those coming in on general entry and you are given support to do so.

I have read some other posts here about the number of diplomatic posts on the fast stream system and I have seen comments about the type of people they look for. I think it is absolutely true that there are very few of these posts - I think typically they take between about 7 and 15 fast streamers a year. One year they took 30 but this was highly unusual! And given we are still facing austerity measures, my quess is that it will be closer to the 10 mark than 30 placements this year. Part of this is that there is very little, turnaround in the FCO. Once people are lucky enough to get in they tend to stay!

On the point made about gender and background, I find these comments difficult because the FCO is extremely open to people from all backgrounds. I worked there for two years and I am not oxbridge - I went to a state funded school and have a very, dare I say it...working class background. My career has not been hampered.

I will conceed that oxbridge tend to be better prepared for these types of assessments so have a high level of success but I reject the premise that there is a favouring of men in the diplomatic service - this is 100% not my experience and in fact FS cohorts tend to be female dominated nowadays.

Hope this helps

I just took a look at the recruitment figures for the last few years, and the number of spaces have actually been on the increase. The yearly intakes for 2010-2013 have been 14, 23, 31, and 29. In the last case there were actually 32 vacancies, but only 29 people recommended for appointment. It's possible they over recruited the last couple of years and will cut back on spaces this year, I suppose, but I wouldn't be hugely surprised to see another year with ~30 people accepted.

Thanks for clarfying, I had been told that the year I previously applied (2010/11) had a very low amount of overall vacancies compared with other years so it's good to know that they have been increasing every year since! Fingers crossed it's another good year, otherwise I need to conclude I choose bad years to apply lol!

Yeah, definitely worth applying. It's hard to say what the 'pass score' is, but if you're in the top 30-35%, you'll be fine. Just go through the answers to the questions on the practice, work out why they are what they are.

Robboadam.. you're back! Does that mean you had some good news from Parity..?

As far as I can see, this is an entirely new route into the Civil Service and at a similar level to the Fast Stream. Posting it here in case anyone is interested:

Applications open on 3rd November.

Shh! We don't want everyone to know...

Nothing to lose in applying--your scores will probably get better after you've also done the practice tests.

Oh, I'm sorry for not replying to everyone, but I was a bit of a mess last night so just turned the computer off and went to bed.

I called them this morning, and they said they'd sort it out and let me know by the end of the morning.......obviously that's way passed so I'll give them another call in about an hour.

We'll see - I don't wanna jump to conclusions, so I'm just gonna wait to see what they say. I'll let you guys know though.

And thanks for the support guys!
Ok......silly me in not realising that they'd sent me a reply at 9:30am to my Fast Stream messages!

They said they've updated the database and my response has now been saved.

If that means what I think it means......BIG PHEW.

I completed the tests yesterday and waiting for a reply. How long does this generally take?

Also, how long will the entire process be (roughly)? Wondering whether I need to get a temp job in the mean time.

If successful you can expect to start between September and November next year, depending on the stream.

So yeah, you probably want to get that temp job.
Doesn't look like e-tray scores will come out today, comrades
Completed the etray a couple of days ago; unlike what everyone else is saying, I feel that I did terribly in the first part and quite well in the second.

Really hope I don't fail at this stage after passing the EAC...

Am I right in thinking you go straight through if you're on the analytical FS?

same for me. Literally guessed all answers except one for the first part, wrote lots of good things for the second. Shame my second part probably won't even be read haha.

Good luck anyway!

Best of luck to those waiting for etray results..I'm yet to do mine. Does anyone know if the practice one available is 2h30 like the real thing? Or is it a shorter version? (want to make sure i have enough time to do it!) Thanks!

Practice is 35 mins long - also gives you the answers and reasons behind them so it's pretty decent. Doesn't prepare you for the written exercise though, but then that's only relevant if you pass the e-tray email section.
