Civil service fast stream 2014/2015

Why do you think it was a disaster? I had mine yesterday too and thought it went ok.. I was certainly a lot less nervous once I got into the swing of it and the assessment tasks were less daunting than I had expected!

May I ask how you got into your current role and what your progression has been like..?

What's your experience of the prospects in terms of good posts and promotion on the GFS - Diplomatic Service?

I have read some other posts here about the number of diplomatic posts on the fast stream system and I have seen comments about the type of people they look for. I think it is absolutely true that there are very few of these posts - I think typically they take between about 7 and 15 fast streamers a year. One year they took 30 but this was highly unusual! And given we are still facing austerity measures, my quess is that it will be closer to the 10 mark than 30 placements this year.

I just took a look at the recruitment figures for the last few years, and the number of spaces have actually been on the increase. The yearly intakes for 2010-2013 have been 14, 23, 31, and 29. In the last case there were actually 32 vacancies, but only 29 people recommended for appointment. It's possible they over recruited the last couple of years and will cut back on spaces this year, I suppose, but I wouldn't be hugely surprised to see another year with ~30 people accepted.

So I started my application last night for the Generalist (better late than never). I've just taken the practise Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. What sort of scores are good enough? It said I was top 35% in verbal and middle 30% in numerical, would it worth applying?

I found the Numerical insanely hard, only knew about 3 of the 18 questions, guessed the rest. The one about presumed crime rates I just couldn't understand.

Yeah, definitely worth applying. It's hard to say what the 'pass score' is, but if you're in the top 30-35%, you'll be fine. Just go through the answers to the questions on the practice, work out why they are what they are.

As far as I can see, this is an entirely new route into the Civil Service and at a similar level to the Fast Stream. Posting it here in case anyone is interested:

I completed the tests yesterday and waiting for a reply. How long does this generally take?

Also, how long will the entire process be (roughly)? Wondering whether I need to get a temp job in the mean time.

Best of luck to those waiting for etray results..I'm yet to do mine. Does anyone know if the practice one available is 2h30 like the real thing? Or is it a shorter version? (want to make sure i have enough time to do it!) Thanks!
