Help with Mercutio / Romeo & Juliet English Exam question

Why is it important that Mercutio dies?
Mercutio's death alters the path of the plot entirely. Prior to that point the play was reasonably light hearted. Afterwards the story takes a dark turn, it is the pivotal moment from which the story heads into a downward spiral, eventually leading to the tragic ending. There is a domino effect occurring which originates from the death of Mercutio. You could call him a catalyst.
