Help, the library confuses me

I realise seeing as I'm half way through my second year that I should probably know how to use the library by now, but ....

I was just wondering what the difference was between having a book on hold and recalling a book. Also, when you put a book on hold/recall it, do you have to ask at the desk for it, or is there a hold shelf somewhere where you just go and pick up the book yourself?

If you want a book that someone has already taken out of the library you 'recall' the book. When the book arrives back at the library it is put on 'hold' i.e. put on those shelves behind the library desks. You'll find out that your book has returned either by e-mail or through a little note in your college pigeon-hole depending on your user settings.

You then go up to the desk and say 'Hello, i've got a book to pick up', hand them your card and hope it hasn't gone missing.

Im digging up the piles of paper I got during the Fresher's Week n still have no clue about the college library's policy. Can u renew a book borrowed from a college library? I tried renewing mine online, but I only got my deadline extended to the next day. Doesnt make sense???
