It depends what you're studying. If it's a creative course your uni will usually send you a list once your place is confirmed.

What do you plan to study?

If you are doing an arts subject, it's likely that there will be an art shop close to your university where you will be able to buy your art materials. There's no need to worry about buying them yet. It's extra things that you would need to bring to uni and you could also end up buying a lot of stuff that you don't need!

For other subjects, a laptop is a must, and aside from that it just depends on how you like to take/store your notes. So you might buy notebooks for your different modules, or you might prefer to have different ring binders for your modules where you store the notes you have written on lined paper ,or you might prefer an iPad to take notes on, or you might just take your laptop to lectures. It really depends on you. You might do a mixture of these things.

It's always good to have a pen on you and a backup pen in case it stops working ( black pens are ideal especially with thoughts of form/photocopying) but unless there are resources specific to your subject I think those are the main things. The only other things that I think might be helpful are highlighters if your subject will require you to read lots of printed out materials and a stapler if it's likely that you will have lots of printed articles and slides etc

Hope that helps,

Hi there,

This differs greatly between courses. However, a key tip would be don't buy any course materials (in terms of books), academic books/textbook are often very expensive and there will be many copies of the books in your University library, or/and on their online library! This will save you lots of money

Hey!
Here are some must-have items that can greatly enhance your university experience:

Laptop or Computer: A reliable laptop or computer is crucial for your academic work. It allows you to access online resources, take notes, write papers, and conduct research. Make sure it meets the requirements for software used in your courses. Some universities also loan laptops from their libraries, so you might want to check that option out as well.

Notebooks and Stationery: Despite the digital age, having physical notebooks and stationery is still important. They come in handy during lectures, allowing you to jot down key points, draw diagrams, and brainstorm ideas.

Textbooks or E-books: Depending on your course requirements, you may need textbooks or e-books. Check your syllabus or consult with your professors to determine which books are essential. Consider purchasing or renting used textbooks to save money.

Online Resources and Databases: Many universities provide access to online libraries, research databases, and academic journals. Take advantage of these resources to enhance your learning, conduct research, and find credible sources for assignments.

Student Planner or Calendar: Managing your time effectively is crucial in university. A student planner or calendar helps you stay organized by tracking deadlines, exams, and other important events. It's a valuable tool to manage your schedule and avoid last-minute stress.

Storage Devices and Cloud Storage: Backing up your files is essential to avoid data loss. Invest in USB flash drives, external hard drives, or use cloud storage services to save and access your files from multiple devices.

Backpack or Bag: A sturdy and comfortable backpack or bag is essential for carrying your laptop, textbooks, notebooks, and other materials. Choose one that can accommodate your essentials and is comfortable to carry around campus.

Comfortable Shoes and Clothing: Since you'll be spending a significant amount of time on campus, it's important to have comfortable shoes for walking between classes and suitable clothing for different weather conditions.

Remember, these are just general suggestions, and the specific materials you'll need may vary depending on your field of study and university. It's always a good idea to check with your professors and upperclassmen for any additional recommendations tailored to your program. Enjoy your first year at university and make the most of this exciting experience!

Not really something you'll be taking to lectures but a saucepan, utensil and a shedload of pasta is a "must" for the majority of students
