What's it like studying a Beginner's language at University?

I'm in Year 12 and considering studying either linguistics or linguistics with a language. I'm interested in what people who studied a beginner's langauge in some capacity at university thought of the course. Personally, I'm not a very literature- or culture-minded person (much more interested in the language and linguistics side of things), so I was wondering - what did you think of the culture/history/literature side of the course you took? Obviously to study a language ab initio you have to have an understanding of or interest in grammar/language/linguistics - what was it like once you'd attained a decent level of competence in the language you were studying and moved on to different modules?

Any advice you have would be a great help :smile:
