Would studying Social Policy and Economics rather than straight economics at LSE put me in a significantly worse position when applying for investment banking jobs.

You could study history for all analyst recruiters in the Investment Banking industry care. Just make sure you're from a target university. LSE definately is a target university along with Imperial and Oxford.
