Until you visit Loughborough it'll be hard for you to compare. Then there's knowing where else you've applied, what grades you expect, stuff like that. I haven't been to Lincoln or Herts but as a second year at lboro I'm having a great time here. And to a degree what you look for depends what kind of person you are. You hear night life mentioned a lot on TSR but there are plenty of people at uni who don't go out often enough for it to matter too much. I know people who go out twice a week and they seem to like it. But you may be the kind of person who spends a lot of time taking part in societies, sports clubs, going to the gym, going to the pub or just hanging out with friends. Bear that in mind. Don't forget you have a life at uni; course is important but you're also spending 3+ years at uni, you'll meet loads of people and should have an amazing time.
I'll try to speak you through this from the perspective of someone who has had to apply to university more than once due to health problems. The first part of the process is making your 5 choices; here you pick universities for your course - course content(modules), how it's assessed(exams, courseworks, group work etc), the entry tariff(it should be challenging but not too challenging and this is probably the best way to gauge it), whether they offer placements or study abroad if that's what you want. At this point there should be a few that excite you for that reason. You can get an idea for some other aspects but there's not much you can tell without visiting. After that you'll get your offers, that may narrow down your choices a little. At this point you should take your time to go and see the universities in person, feel them out. See if you can see yourself going to lectures there. Find out what the selection of societies and sports clubs is like, how good they are. Accommodation is worth looking into but unless it's dire I wouldn't worry too much. It's rarely that good and you'll only be there a year until you find a house with friends you meet. Facilities can be important, such as library, the gym, other sports facilities. If you can I would also recommend trying to check the town out, the local supermarket, have a look around the student areas if you can, grab a bite to eat. I suppose I should give a mention to night life but I'm not sure you can tell much until you can experience it. This should all give you a feel for where you really want to go. I would imagine by then you'd have your firm and insurance.
Now, regarding Loughborough, we're great for sports. Regardless of ability you can take part. I feel like our passion for sport bleeds over into other parts of life in lboro. Obv we have good sport facilities. If you're into sport or want to get into sport I'd highly recommend bearing that in mind. I like the campus. I've seen better, I've seen worse. It's good. Accommodation is fine, library's good. I prefer the computer labs to study personally. It's a town so it doesn't quite have a city vibe but it's a nice area. Sainsburys and Tescos are both close. Number of pubs around. Spoons, McD, KFC, coffee places, cineworld, a lot of the retailers you'd want. There are a few things missing. We're close to Nottingham and Leicester though.
