density of water

What do they mean by the density of water and how is it linked to answering a question? I usually just ignore that bit and then do the question

You are given the volume of water, but you have to apply q = mcΔT in order to find the energy absorbed.

The 'm' is mass being heated, so if you have 100 ml of water you can just use 0.1kg if yo are given the density = 1g/ml
