University racism "complacency" warning

Baroness Amos, the UK's first black woman university head, says there are "deep-seated prejudices and stereotypes which need to be overcome". She has also been stated that universities are "complacent" over a lack of senior black academics and lower achievement among ethnic minority students.

Some of the examples of gaps in representation and achievement to be presented are:

Out of more than 18,000 professors at UK universities, only about 110 are black

Only 3.2% of academic managers, directors and senior officials are from ethnic minorities

There is an average 16% pay gap between UK-domiciled white and ethnic minority academic managers, directors and senior officials

There is a 15 percentage point gap between ethnic minority and white students getting first-class and upper-second degree grades

There is a higher dropout rates for black undergraduates

You can read more on the story here.

What do you make of this? Do you think unis are being complacent? What do you think can be done to help this?

tbh i've never witnessed so much racism till i moved to the UK and i come from the racist capital of Canada. lol true story though.

yes, i think we're all complacent about inequality, because unless you're the one discriminated against you don't give a hoot. or you 'care', you just don't care enough.

regarding professors, i don't know what the solution is. education inherently discriminates against poor people, which is often people of colour, so until we have free education we're gonna have inequality for a long time, imho.

Well this is just ********. Just because they're is little attendance from the black community, that doesn't mean it's racist. They're is numerous factors like preferences among black communities and culture, and the fact that blacks tend to have on average lower Iq than whites, i.e. from the Bell Curve. These are nothing short of genetic scienctific facts, apologists blame parliament rather than blaming the black community - not that u should blame them, rather they are responsible adults and they should do (mostly) as they like. The common presupposition among social justice advocates is that the parliament is at fault, the country has "institutional" sexism or racism. All trigger words for the far left to get their way because they either deny science or don't want their feelings to get hurt.

Lol yh sure you did. Keep pathetically crying like a Marxist. The poor get "discriminated" against because we live in the glorious system of capitalism where if u want to better yourself, u do so by your own merit, not by socialistic demands because you are unskilled or dumb. We are going to have inequality because people are inherently unequal. In fact, coercing people who don't go into uni to pay for your uni payments is "unequal" - pay for it yourselfs.

No people don't get discriminated against as one might think (racially en masse) - it's just that this generation has developed a social weakness, they are immature and child like. Canada the racist capital of the world, after the put in place Bill C16 for the (laughable) rights for transgender people? Lol

just wanted to ask whether you were a person of colour and can vouch first hand that you are a person of colour, from a working class background and have been given everything because of their colour? I'll wait.

Also, turning this into "the loony lefty" debate doesn't help, because it reinforces the belief that people are in denial that people from minorities are underrepresented. Considering we are an exceptionally diverse nation, I would struggle to think the British workforce of BME are too incompetent to warrant being professors? Universities are still a privilege for the white and rich to enjoy. If discrimination didn't exist there wouldn't be a need to counter that with positive discrimination and opening up conferences for BME minorities so they do not feel disenfranchised with the system put in place.

Your first request is completely unclear, but I will answer it accordingly to show u what is wrong with it, since u will not be satisfied (I will assume).

I am a person of colour, I am white. My family was originally very poor, farmers who (still) grow veggies on our own land. I can vouch for myself that I am. I don't understand "and have been given everything because of their colour" - surely, indirectly all people have by the fact that you are raised and given money or work for it. All different races fall under this category. I will add that poorer people unfortunately just produce more babies for child benefit, for more money rather than getting a good job. Seems like a solution to the poorer black and white communities who are just trailer trash degenerate people.

Seems that the left narrative was correct after all. The want for socialism, the blame of parliamentary systems rather than being responsible for onself fits this. All left wing conceptions, social justice namely.
Yes I think they would likely be incompetent given on average, the lower Iq of races other than Whites and Eastern Asians. Yes, less likely to get a job by equality on the grounds of merit rather than equality for races, on affirmative action grounds. Yes, exceptionally diverse nation for our own disaster. Multiculturalism doesn't work. Universities are a privilege for people who are capable to attend, which happens to be the "white and rich". Seems like a likely natural scenario to me. Discrimination does exist, and did exist before the 60s in America. Not like today which is my point. There are no laws against black people. They're are however cases which white conservative people like Lauren Southern have been banned from the UK because she had a poster which stated Muhammed was gay - literally (the right wing pol. Opinions sets off minorities. Count Dankula, a white man convicted for hate speech. This is nothing short of a joke, u don't know what racism is. If we allow what the new type of discrimation is defined as, we cannot make jokes at whoever's expense. Including minorities, Jews, etc. If discrimation means u want to hurt someone's feelings with jokes, I will allow discrimination then, this newly defined version and to boot, will also reject toleration. People are inherently different and it would be a case of inequality to go against such a system. I hope they feel bad, it's not the systems fault or responsibility to care for their lowly feelings - just get a job at a university if it is that easy.

No, you're white, not a person of colour.

The trailer trash consists of mainly white people, I am yet to see a person of colour on Benefits Street. Social justice is a key concept and important foundation to our lives. I also think there's a reason why the Asians do have a reputation for academics. Muhammed *Peace Be Upon Him* by the way.

Lauren Southern. Okay if you bring her up as some sort of wronged political idol I'm done with this conversation. Go back to your Rebel Media.

Also, there's a reason why extreme right wing views are banned and left wing views aren't. Right wing views are toxic.

What do jokes have to do with this? More importantly, what is your problem?

I just want to know which top uni you attend and what top job you have? Even though you're an entitled so and so it's not like you've made anything out of your life.

I love this. A perfect demonstration of ignorant, self-absorbed vainglory. Keep up at it.

Social justice is a pile of shite. Much like your post.

i'm not sure why you're so angry when your side is winning.

btw i'm allowed to have an opinion on free education. it's never going to happen but that, imho, is the solution to equality. some people will never get the opportunity just because they were unfortunate enough to be born into a poor family. they have to jump miles while the spoiled middle class takes it for granted.

i'm not going to talk to you about bill c-16. trans gender discrimination is not racism, so i think you're a bit confused on the issue.

What type of racism have you experienced here in the UK and would you mind saying generally where you're studying, i.e. a small white town in Norfolk or one of the metropolises?

I agree with last para. It is very difficult to marker someone as "free schools meals-y", so that argument about poverty is often lost. Of course, someone being BME is more obvious.

For racism to be proven, you'd need to show that academics applying for lecturerships are disproportionately disfavoured if they're BME. Only then you can say that universities are racist places.

Honestly, ignore them.

They're the pressed right wing, no reasoning with them.

oh sorry, no no, i've never experienced racism personally at uni. my uni is awesome (north east). and they're big into diversity and the importance of BME and women in judicial/legal roles. the most racism i've witnessed is right here in TSR, but also hearing people's opinions on Brexit and hatred for immigrants in general, which we all know too well.

i don't think the lack of BME representation in the judicial (or in this case the education) system is about racism. i suspect it's the lack of candidates, i.e. POC can't apply for jobs because they can't afford the education (which brings me back to free education, which isn't going to happen).
