Is Empathy An Important Qaulity of a Lawyer?

Its just an intriguing question, I mean should lawyers be able to empathise with clients to do their job efficiently. OR should they be subjective and detached?
Also what other qualities -in your opinion- differentiate between a good lawyer and a great lawyer?

( 9 hours later.....) i think so to an exent, to do what is best for a client you must sympathise with them but not to an extent where it affects you professionally.

No. Personally I can't see it helping. Where would it fit in? Your empathy for the client won't change what the law is or what you need to do to best represent them.
