Yes, you would connect to the speakers from the 3.5mm jack.

However I'd recommend against that particular monitor, it uses a TN panel which is the cheapest form of panel known for relatively weak colour and poor viewing angles. They have advantages among competitive professional gamers, but for 99% of people the advantage is not relevant.

You want to look for either a VA or IPS panel for a good quality screen. For a 24", 1080p, high refresh rate monitor, these two options are great for about £20 more.

It would work, but likely not ideal, it's a bit of a trek for the sound signal and i'd be curious how it processed it in terms of lag ect

Like if I send my audio through HDMI to my TV or projector. it works, but it's a bit...crap and I lose a lot of my audio shaping options (I need to rely on the TV's) I'd be taking my audio output from as close to source as possible.

I wouldn't be too concerned with a single extra step in the chain personally. I run audio from the PC to a DAC then into the base station of some wireless headphones then out again into the speaker amp while video goes into a monitor via DP, and also from the Nintendo Switch into the monitor via HDMI and out again into the amp via 3.5mm like the OP is planning, with zero discernible latency in either pathway.
It wouldn't be so much the step as i'd want to know how that step was processed. As you say if that that monitor uses the cheapest panel possible, it wouldn't give me much confidence in it's secondary features.

In fairness yeah, home users sitting playing games are unlikely to notice anything, I notice it more from a sound production/recording perspective where i'm using multiple audio in/out at once where even a touch of latency from a bad audio interface/conversion will cause problems.
