I believe the equivalent would be to ‘discuss a point of law’ - during this time, the jury will be asked to leave the courtroom, then will be called back in once the matter has been resolved.

I don't know the exact circumstances that that happens in America and the extent to which the circumstances are similar in the England and Wales, but as has been said, if a point of law needs to be discussed in the absence of the jury, they are sent out so that those discussions can take place. There's no equivalent in trials without juries, as indeed I'm not sure there is in America either.
