Presidency in society and FYs application points

Hey

I'm currently a medical student and have heard that being a president of a society during university can aid in Foundation Years applications. Is this correct? If so, are there any requirements for said society to be eligible for it (e.g.:medical related, being recognized by the SU)?

I'm currently president of a med sports society, so we aren't part of the SU but of MedSoc, which is recognized by the SU. Does that make any difference?

Thank you very much!
It won't give your point in your UKFP application however later during CT/ST applications, many programmes will consider this as part of leadership.

It doesn’t count at all for standard FY1 applications. Standard FP scores rely on your end performance measure (I.e. your ranking in your year) and your SJT (situational judgement test) score.

If you wanted to do an academic programme (AFP) in Med Ed or Leadership, you could add the leadership experience to your application form and would have something to talk about in your interview. As mentioned in the post above, I think leadership experience can also count toward IMT/CST applications.

Your sports leadership position might well count toward IMT/CST, but I’m not sure. At the end of the day, do stuff at medical school if you’re interested in it. It’ll give you more to talk about in life and in interviews in future anyway.

It doesn't directly add to normal FY points as mentioned. Its still a good thing to do though. Gets you leadership experience, and also might gain you contacts. I recently offered a student a publication opportunity above some other students, partly because I was impressed that they were the head of the surgical society and it made me think they would be more driven than the other students.

For Core surgical training this year you got max points for
"I hold/have held a national
leadership or managerial role
related to the provision of
healthcare for 6 or more months
and can demonstrate a positive
impact

Examples include: BMA national
executive, trainee representative
of a specialist society or college
or a nationally held leadership
and management fellowship."
