Failing GCSE’s and Suffering from Anxiety

When I was at Primary School I was deemed as a ‘trouble maker’ because of my Autism which I was not yet diagnosed with at the time. Because of this, I was consistently excluded and eventually permanently expelled from school which took months off my education.

In Year 7 I moved to a Special Educational Needs School to help me with my Autism and Speech and Language difficulties. This school has helped me with specifically those areas but not academically. I have made absolutely no progress in my education and I am currently predicted a Grade 1 in Mathematics and a Grade 2 in English Language, I have also been given a target grade given by my Maths teacher to get a Grade 2 by the end of Year 11 so not even the school has faith in me on getting a pass.

I am also extremely unhappy, have no friends and have been suffering from anxiety. I believe the only solution to this is by moving to a mainstream school more locally as the school I currently goto takes over an hour to get to which involves taking three trains on the way there and back which really doesn’t help with the stress and anxiety.

If anybody has any solutions on how I can resolve this whether that be moving schools, please let me know!
Hi, I had a hard time with my GCSE’s as well. I don’t have autism or speech and language difficulties but I have severe anxiety.

It may help to get professional help and support. While this sounds like the same answer most people give I think it will be beneficial as they’re trained to help individuals with their mental health. Some professionals are qualified to help those with autism etc.

If your teachers think you’re going to fail: ignore them! My Spanish teacher told me she thought I was going to fail after my speaking exam and before the written one but I passed all my GCSE’s which proves teachers can be wrong! Although it is late in the year maybe you can look for tutors? There are also good websites online you can find. The BBC may not be available in your country but I find their websites helpful for the basics.

Remember to take breaks or your brain won’t take it all in. It’s good to go over things you’ve done previously as well. Making lists with bullet points, color coding, mind maps etc are good ways to remember, especially if you’re a visual learner. If you integrate something you enjoy into it you might find it easier such as drawing.

Good luck!
um hi! i cant say i understand at all what your going through , though it sounds absolutely horrendous...

im in year 11 so, if you wanted, i could totally help you out in some subjects!

obviously your not going to be doing the same as me but if you want help in maths, biology, chemistry, physics (im a bit shakey on equations but otherwise im good), latin, drama (more how to write a portfolio etc), history, and geography just let me know!

im only really confident in biology and chemistry but i know the stuff needed to get at least a 5 in every other subject

Hi, thank you for your response! I actually already have a 1-1 session once a week with a Mental Health Specialist from CAHMS who was hired by the school to support me. I have been doing these sessions with her for around 5 months now and I haven’t been seeing any progress in terms of my self confidence and anxieties although I do speak to her a lot about my difficulties.

I just feel like I am in a really difficult position at the moment as there seems to be nothing working and the stress is just building and mounting up.

If counselling isn't working, you should speak to your GP about what other options there are. Perhaps CBT? I hesitate to suggest it, especially as you're young, but sometimes if therapy isn't working, adding medication to that can help supplement it. This is a big decision though and would require a lot of research as its something your parents would have to be on board with.

So I basically just told my mum about this and spoke to her about my anxieties travelling to school and at school and she just told me to ‘get a grip’. Literally nobody understands... I don’t know what to do
