Is Aston University a good choice?

Hello. I have the option between a few universities but I was looking further into Aston. Aston is a good university to study business however I am a little concerned over the nightlife, students, accommodation and pretty much everything about the university. Firstly, what is the nightlife like? Lots of clubs etc? In addition what the students like. I understand Birmingham is a very mixed city so are there different ethnic groups like Whites, Browns etc or is it like 1 large group? What is the campus like? From pictures the accommodation looks small. And lastly is the accommodation small. From pictures the accommodation doesn't look the best. My main worry is the fact the different ethnic groups are split up and there isn't much socialising.
Mmh, what are the other options?

Hi there,

I am a current Aston student and I will try to answer your questions as best I can. I would say the Nightlife at Aston is pretty good, this is helped by the fact that the university campus is very close to the main city centre. There are a good number of clubs dotted around and very popular areas for student nights, Broad street comes to mind which is a very popular street with various clubs and pubs on either side. There are also various events organised by the different clubs and societies at Aston as well as the student union. The good thing is that the clubs are not so close to the campus that you're bothered by the noise or traffic, but they're not so far that you can't walk to them if it comes to it. Aston also provides for a robust student life with loads of activities during the day if you're not one for nightlife.

Birmingham is a very diverse city and that's reflected in the Aston student body. I would say the social scene is not so rigid that people stick to their ethnic groups. As is the same as in everyday normal life, you have people who are more comfortable with people of their own ethnic group and they stick together, you also have diverse friendship groups. There is no method or template to it. But to address your main worry, ethnic groups are not split and there is a lot of socialising. People socialise both within and outside their ethnic groups.

I am not sure what accommodation you're looking at, but there are a lot of accommodations available on and around campus to suit your needs and requirements. If you don't like the ones on campus have a look around campus at The heights, Staniforth house, Bentley, Penworks house, etc (these are a few names of accommodations less than 5 minutes from campus). They offer different types and sizes of rooms so you might find something more to your liking there.

Hope this has helped

*Ethel
