if you can, try and prepare a pice that can go with any prompt. usually the prompts are quite broad, so if you go into the exam with an idea of what you're going to write that saves a lot of time and you can concentrate on finding a way to link it to the prompt (so that you're actually answering the question) and actually writing your response. prepare for the exam by doing past papers so you can see the different types of prompts they give, and if you've settled on an idea that you want to write, this will give you some experience in adapting it to fit the prompt you're given so you're able to do it well when the actual exam rolls around.
