Feeling low//bad day at work

I had a bad day at work

The senior team decided to choose my colleague‘s work over mine. I‘m happy they choose their work because it did represent the brief better.

I just feel, I let myself down A LOT

The brief was in my specialism too and I just feel really down about it.

My colleague did cheer me up, and they kinda apologised because it was meant to be me doing this project.

I feel like a failure...I failed my job...I failed in my performance

I didn‘t contribute to the team because I was that low

Any advice?

It sounds like you are generalising a bit here. Does them not picking your work mean you are a failure? Could there be any other reasons why this might have happened? Does this incident mean you are a complete failure? Are there other areas you don't fail in?

As a perfectionist, I can somewhat understand jumping to thoughts of being a failure, and when I get these thoughts, I go through these kinds of questions to challenge myself - am I really a failure? It can be helpful for finding a more objective view of the situation.

Also, I tend to problem-solve after incidents like this. What could I realistically do to improve my performance next time? Will my low mood and negative thinking get in the way of that? What steps can I take to do better? Is there anyone I can ask for feedback? Is there any extra learning I need to do?

It's tough, I know, but try not to beat yourself up over this. Unfortunately, it is unlikely this will be the last time someone else is picked over you (think of job interviews and things like that!). But does that mean you are a failure?
