It’s to do with subtraction (of indices) not multiplication.

n - (2n - 2) =n - 2n - - 2 = n - 2n + 2 = -n + 2

My bad. That's what I had meant haha. But I still don't understand how you get - - 2, if you are subtracting -2 from n.

Thats because you are subtracting a -ve number e.g 6 - - 2 = 6 + 2
