I don't see why not. They are the same thing, at the end of the day.
You can do working in column vectors but I think it’s best to give your answer in the same way as it’s written in the question

I wouldn't - use the same form for your answer.
I think in most mark schemes they accept column vectors, unless specified give answer in i, j format
