Intercalation application: Work experience/clinical placement

I just finished my 1st year of Med school and I am interesting in intercalating after year 2. Learning about the principles of physiology sparked my interest in anaesthesiology and peri-operative care and I'm keen on gaining some research experience from intercalation.

I have done some research and found some courses that I am considering applying to next year.

I was wondering wether a clinical placement or work experience in one of these departments would make my application more competitive. As I am still in my pre-clinical years we don't have any exposure to anaesthesiology and I was thinking whether it would be appropriate to approach some of my local teaching hospitals to see if they're able to help.

Have you guys got any thoughts on this?

#1: don't call it anaesthesiology in the UK! It's anaesthetics.

#2: find out what the application requirements for those particular intercalated courses are - it's unlikely to include clinical work due to the stage all students will be at.
