SOAS foundation year- Business, Management, Economics & Law with Foundation Year

I was wondering if anyone who has done SOAS BMEL foundation could share what their experience was like, whether they liked it or not and how hard they found it. Im also wondering if there are any student who did this foundation year who managed to transfer to a different London uni to do Law? If so, what uni did you transfer too as I was wanting to do this foundation year and hopefully do well enough to maybe transfer to other unis such as Kings which was my initial firm choice. PM are also appreciated with advice!

Same! I also got that offer and hoping to study the LLB after the foundation year. I was a bit disappointed but I rather go university than resit.

Seeing as all of us on this thread are doing the same course, shall we make a insta group chat?

hii, I was just wondering how it went for you? I have the same offer but my parents want me to look into clearing. Were you able to transfer to Kings after your first year?

You should definitely check clearing as you can get better opportunities, because it may not be possible to get into Kings College from SOAS that easily.

Hi there,

Yes, after successful completion and passing of the foundation year, you will be able to progress onto first year to study law or another course of your choice.

Would you be required to do the LNAT? Or is it just from foundation year directly to LLB? Please help

Hi there,

So upon successful completion of the foundation year, you will then be able to progress to any chosen course, including the LLB, without the need to take the LNAT. Hope that helps 😊.

No bother at all, that's what we are here for.

If you go complete a Foundation Year at SOAS (even if you took BTECs from 16-18), you are still be enrolled onto the Law Programme without an LNAT (as long as you pass the foundation year). LNAT is only part of the UCAS application process, once you are already enrolled, everything is completed internally.

If you would like to apply directly onto the Law Programme and are doing BTECs, then you will need to take the LNAT test. It may be worth applying directly to the 3-year LLB programme if you are able to because even if you are unsuccessful you will be recommended for the Foundation Year automatically so may as well shoot your shot to skip the additional year.

I hope this helps; if you have any more questions, let us know.

Thank you so much!!! Omg u dont know how much I was suffering before your message because I intially messaged the university but they keep repeating and idk if im stupid or its just unclear but I could not fully understand them 😭

Also, I wanted to do foundation year first before starting llb law because honestly I just want to check out the basics and see if I want to do law or change my path. Do you think for that it's a good idea to keep it or should I just apply to llb law from the beginning? Thanku so so much for ur help!!!

No worries, I guess students sometimes explain things a little easier because we have the student perspective - so we've lived it. Happy we explained it well.

As someone who did the Business, Management, Economics & Law, I would not recommend it because you cover very few foundational concepts of law - that you will cover in the first two weeks of the LLB course anyway. The foundation year has more non-law modules then law, it's more well rounded but not necessarily what you are looking for. Instead I would recommend that you attend a summer school and sit in on law lectures to see if you like it.

If you DM your email, I may be able to put you in contact with law faculty so that you can come in person and speak to someone in the law department and see if it is something you are interested in pursuing. Am I right in assuming you are in Year 13 i.e. applying this year for start university in 2026/27?

Yess omg it would be lovely if u could do that!! But, I don't know how to dm someone in this app since I'm extremely new so would it be possible for u to dm me first and then I can press on the notification and provide u with my email?

But considering that I'm currently doing 3 btec/ctec subjects (Health and Social Care Extended Certificate, Business CTEC Extended Certificate, and Applied Science BTEC Extended Certificate), If I dont do foundation year wouldnt that mean I have to take LNAT examination and with the limited time I have left I'm not sure if I'm able to do well 😭

Also yes im in yr13, applying this year for 2026!

I have DMed you, so hopefully you can see that.

I would still say that it's better a few weeks of revision rather than an extra year. I will be completely honest, I revised for a week for my LNAT and got a decent grade. I geniunely believe that if you put your head down and just did some past papers, revised and understand how the paper is assessed you can do well. Here are some mock tests: https://lnat.ac.uk/how-to-prepare/practice-test/.

There are a lot of resources online, here is a YouTube video of someone walking you through the LNAT paper that I found in less then a minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBQVtDI7_Q4&t=37s.

Additionally, you already have the foundation year as a safety net, so if you don't get onto the LLB course you will be offered the foundation year anyway. At the end of the day though, it is completely up to you. But make sure you make an informed choice, and that you truly don't underestimate your ability.
