Scientist Training Programme 2024 Applicants

Hi everyone. It might be early but was hoping to start a thread for the NHS STP 2024 applicants.

Thought it would be nice for people to share what specialty people are hoping to apply for, if they have applied before and what degree(s)/experience they have.

Or if anyone myself has any hints and tips for applying that would be very much appreciated!

For myself this is my first time applying and I am hoping to apply for histopathology or heamatology and transfusion science. I graduated with a First in Biomedical Science in 2021.

Good luck everyone!

Hey, I'm also wanting to apply to histopathology and still thinking what else would interest me. Will be waiting to see the posts once they open up. I'll be final year in Biomed now

hey so Medical Science isn't specifically listed under here relevant degrees but if is life Science based I'm sure emailing them to double check wouldn't hurt.https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/entry-requirements/

Applications would open in January I believe for a September 2024 start, so if you graduate before then absolutely apply when the application window is open. The offer would be subject to your degree outcome in that case. Hope this helps!

Hi have you got any tips for the SJT or the application process in general? Heard the SJT can be quite tricky. Good luck for the application this year!

Hey! No I thought I would take this year out to learn more about the programme and try gain some work experience! What about you?
Hey everyone! I've just accepted a place in Nottingham for Radiation Protection and Diagnostic Radiology for 2024 (applied this year but was notified of my interview really late and missed the deadline for handing my notice in to leave before September so the school agreed to defer me to 2024).

I have a BSc in Physics from the University of Birmingham and have spent 3 years as a teacher since - I didn't have any medical experience at all apart from my final year project at university.

Heyy! I have graduated from the University of Manchester this year. I studied Biomedical Sciences and I am looking forward to applying for the STP for 2024 entry. I am not sure of which speciality yet. Do you have any tips on how to make a successful application and increase my chances of getting a place on the programme?

Hey! I would really look at the core person specification and the job description and try to pick examples where you can demonstrate those skills that are needed. For the SJT, I would say just make sure you answer everything with the NHS values in mind.
Alright, I will do! Thanks so much!

Hi everyone!

I recently started a job as an optical assistant to try and get some patient experience and think i would prefer applying for the ophthalmic and vision science specialism. does anyone have any tips for this?

hahah I was planning to literally do this as well, just waiting for feedback form my OA interview. It would be a good topic to write about to show your interest in the field
Does anyone know what the application process was like last year? What kind of things do they ask you in interviews etc?
Does anyone know if they are going to change the SJT this year? Is it going to be Pearson Vue again? Has anyone tried this platform https://www.jobtestprep.co.uk/nhs-stp-aptitude-test ? Was it helpful?
I am particularly worried about not having a Masters qualification/clinical lab experience whilst applying for the role. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I am the same I don't have lab experience or a masters. I have been working in Health insurance and I am about to do a 2 day lab course for experience alongside volunterring as a first aider. I've heard it's very competitive and a lot of people may be medically trained or have a phd. but don't know until you apply!!
